THURSDAY CRICKET

INGLEWOOD TAKES THE LEAD. C. HUNT’S VIGOROUS KNOCK. Thanks to a vigorous innings by C. Hunt, who scored 81 of a total of 99 made by his side, Inglewood scored a two-ipoint win over Waitara yesterday and now holds a two-point lead in the Thursday cricket competition. The innings was the more meritorious as at one stage Inglewood looked like being hopelessly routed. Hunt gave a hard chance in the slips off his first ball, but thereafter never made a mistake. Considerable interest was taken in the match, which marked the opening of the fourth round,, in which the two teams wei l e starting on even terms with 11 points each. Waitara opened first and lost four wickets for 16, including Kingstone, who was well held by Barry in the slips off Hunt after he had scored one. Priar 38 (including two sixes and three fours) and Muschamp 8, raised the total to 50 for the next wicket, the innings closing for 77. Inglewood started badly, and when Hunt joined J. Ross the score was two for 2. The rout continued until the score stood at six .for 8, and then Speechlay joined Hunt, who commenced hitting out, the score reaching 33 before Speechlay left. With the score nine for 37, Inglewood’s hopes were down to zero. R. Ross then joined Hunt. Hunt attacked the bowling vigorously and manoeuvred so as to secure most of the bowling, whilst his partner too held his wicket up well. Sixes and boundaries came quickly, Hunt hitting three sixers off one oyer from Chadwick. With the score at 75 he was well held by Limmer off a mighty hit, but the fieldsman was over the boundary, so a six was added to the' score. Hunt went on merrily until by the time his partner was bowled for six his tally was 81 not out, including seven sixers and four boundaries.

Kingstone, who had kept wickets remarkably well, got going to some purpose in "Waitara’s second innings, and, placing well, quickly rattled up 80 in a chanceless knock which included two sixes and seven boundaries, and with the score at six for 60 Waitara declared. In the 42 minutes left for play Inglewood lost four wickets for 43 runs. Details are: — INGLEWOOD. First Innings. F. Duncan, b Macrae 1 P. Peacock, b Macrae 1 J.
