SCHNEIDER CUP AIR RACE

MR. MACDONALD INTERESTED. OFFER MADE BY LADY HOUSTON. (British Wireless.) ; Rec. 5.5 p.m. I Rugby, Jan. 28. It is stated that Mr. Ramsay Macdon--ald, who has done a good deal of flying, is personally desirous of an attempt being made to retain the Schneider air trophy, and the deputation was impressed by Mr. MacDonald’s extensive knowledge of all aspects of the contest, ; notexcluding purely technical questions. The, question of expense is no longer regarded as an obstacle to participation. Other aspects of the matter are. being discussed to-day with - the Air Ministry and the Admiralty. Lady Houston yesterday offered to meet the extra expenses of defending the trophy beyond what had already been provided privately.

ATTITUDE OF THE GOVERNMENT MAY REVERSE ITS DECISION. Rec. 8 p.m. London, Jan. 28. Well-informed circles are. inclined to the view that' the Government is likely to reverse its decision not to. permit the qee of Royal. Air Force pilots or machines in the Schneider trophy ail race. It is thought official support will be given. It is understood that Cabinet has reviewed the position in the light of the growing public sentiment in favour of participation and bemuse of the .fact that the Government is not committed to any expense. The Morning Post's political correspondent states Cabinet has decided to permit R.A.F. pilots and machines to be used for the race. The paper’s aeronautical correspondent confirms this and says Cabinet also has considered, the construction of a new seaplane engine together with modification of existing machines in order to increase the speeds attainable by 20 miles an hour.. There is just sufficient time to carry out this programme. The Daily Herald says definitely that the Government will agree to participa-, tion in the Schneider Cup eubject V disciplinary conditions.
