ANNUAL FESTIVALS TO CONTINUE.

Christchurch, Last Night, i,. Members of the New Zealand Society of Professional- Teachers of Music met id annual conference at Canterbury Col lev/ to-day. Mr. Robert Parker, C.M.G., pre- , sided over an attendance of nearly 50 members. A welcome to the A'isiting delegates was extended by Mr. A. J. Mertoid president of the division ot the society. The deputy-Mayor (Di,. Thacker) Avelcomed the delegates on be.half of the city, and Dr. Hight (rector) Avelcomed them to Canterbury College. The president stated that the society’s annual conferences Avere tending to bring about a fine community spirit in the profession. Members were ceasing to be > a lot of individual units each ploughing his or her OAvn particular furrow. ■: Reports receiA’ed on music week in various centres Avere considered generally satisfactory, .and it was decided that the festivals be continued. It Avas agreed to call the attention of the Education Department to the need to give music a higher status in tile schools and to train children in Might reading. j ~. ' ■

The nanie of the society was changed to the Music Teachers’ Association (N.Z.). The follbAvihg executive was .appointed: Messrs. Robert Parker and I. F. Watkins (Wellington), Dr. Phillips and Mr. Barry Coney (Auckland), Dr. Galway arid Mr. C. Gray (Otfigo) and Messrs. Sidney Williamson and A. J. Merton (Canterbury).
