FOWLS NEARLY BURNED
WEXT TO ROOST AT FIRE, Timfe cruelly deceived some hundred fowls. at t Burwood, Christchurch, last week when the fire from the plantations was sweeping across the ecrub country. At one poultry farm in the path of the flames masses of smoke sweeping over the run shut out the sunlight at halfpast four and on the understanding that night had come the fowls obediently retired to roost. Two men then walked into the deserted run to see what could be done with the fowls, which .were apparently going to he burned alive. Quickly. the news spread that it was feeding tipje, and with tl|§ Uhine? fifty yards
away the birds turned en masse to receive their rations, an army of ducks hovering on the outskirts of tho fowls.
Everywhere the men went the fowls followed, demanding their fare with indignant clucking. In a short, time the flames swept-over the road, but by some sudden change of wind were diverted from their path, sweeping past the farm afid the Koivk.
