FISHING AT ROTORUA
SPORT IN THE LAKE. “BEST FOR MANY YEARS.” The season’s angling in Lake Rotorua so far, says the Rotorua Chronicle, has been productive of the best sport that has been known for many, years. In the early part of the season fly fishermen did not have the best of sport, but many fine catches were reported by trolling parties, with an average weight of fish of about 31b. With the access of warmer weather, however, . fish have taken the fly fairly well, with promise of better sport still as the season advances. To date the following are the best weights recorded: SJlb., 9Jlb., 101 b. odd ounces, and 111 b., all of the rainbow species, and in absolutely perfect condition. There has been for the last two or three years an abundance of beautifully conditioned fish in the lake of about 11b. to 21b. in weight, and from existing signs it is apparent that the; harvest' of these fish matured should be reaped this eeason. The lake itself is in an extraordinarily low state; in fact, lower than it has been for at least a decade, or even a longer period. One -Ngongotaha angler states that fish cannot get from the river to the lake, or vice versa. So far as the favoured resorts are concerned it is prooable that the Awahou is giving the best results, with the Waiteti or Hamurana as a good second, although Ngongotaha is not lagging far behind. “The Channel” has been holding good at both ends, .although inclined to be rather patchy.
