FIRE BRIGADE ACTIVITIES. ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS. The annual meeting of the Inglewood Volunteer Fire Brigade was held in the fire station on Monday, when there was a good attendance of active and honorary members. Owing to the absence of the Mayor the deputy-Mayor, Mr. F. Spurdle, presided. The annual report was read.' Superintendent Crossman stated during the year there had been three fires,, a cottage in James Street, a chimney in Matai Street, and a motor-lorry. All the gear for fire-fighting purposes, was in good condition and two additional smoke masks had been purchased. The attendance of members throughout thu year had been excellent, the total number of musters being 51. The best attendances were those of Superintendent Crossman, Firmen W. Devereux and Fireman Julian (51 eaxffi), and Secretary Lindsey and Foreman Lawson (49 each). Fireman W. Devereux received a twoyear bar, making 23 years’ service. De-puty-Superintendent Reed received a two-year bar, making' 11 years. Fireman Evetts received a two-year bar, making seven years. Foreman Law and Fireman Allen received three-year certificates.
The fire police again had proved their usefulness at the fire in James Street by keeping sufficient room to allow the brigade to work comfortably. ' It was stated that the of the brigade were each insured for £lOOO against all accidents while on fire duties and the U.F.B.A. assurance of £5O a man was still carried by the brigade. Several cribbage tournaments had been held at the station during the year and the ladies’ committee had been entertained by the brigade. The expenditure had amounted to £5O 12s sd, leaving a credit of £4l 6s sd, this showing an improvement of-about £8 on last year’s. In the social balancesheet a credit balance of £3l 10s 9d was shown. i ■ The chairman presented the honours. He congratulated the recipients, especi-’ ally Fireman Devereux on his 23 years’ service, stating that in. two years he would receive the gold star, a thing that few firemen in New Zealand possessed. The election of officers resulted: — Superintendent, Mr. E. Crossman (re-elected)deputy-superintendent, Mr. C, Reed (re-elected); first foreman, Mr. V. Devereux (re-elected); second foreman, Mr. A. Sattler; secretary, Mr. T. Lindsay (re-elected); auditors, Messrs J. A. Ross and W. Devereux (re-elected). GENERAL AND PERSONAL. A rather violent storm passed over Inglewood early on Monday, doing considerable damage to a number of gardens. The storm was short but nearly inches of rain fell. January has so far proved a very wet month, as already over 7i inches of rain has fallen. Mr. W. Jefferys, Wellington, is spending a short holiday in Inglewood, where he formerly resided.
