At Maryville (Missouri) 4000 whites had a battle with the police, who were taking to gaol a negro who had confessed to attacking and murdering a young white school-mistress. The police were forced to retire, and the mob handcuffed the negro, clipped his ears with shears, and dragged him four miles to the country school-house where the crime was committed. They then chained the victim to the roof, on which they poured, petrol, and. set fire to the structure. The negro was burned to death. The lynchers watched the flames quietly until the 'building was burned to the ground.
