NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL

LEGALITY OF THE APPOINTMENT.

By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. London, Jan. 12.

There is every reason to believe that Sir Isaac Isaacs’ appointment is perfectly valid, and that Sir Isaac can take over the Governorship as soon as convenient. It can be assumed that Mr. J. H. Thomas duly performed his part in participating formally in the appointment, thus accepting formal responsibility of the Royal sign manual, although the advice to his Majesty was the Commonwealth Ministry’s. Doubts existed among Federal Ministers as to the legality of the appointment of Sir Isaac Isaacs as GovernorGeneral, and it was stated that the swearing-in ceremony arranged for January might ’be postponed. Mr. Scullin, the Acting-Attorneys General, Mr. Daly, and Sir Isaac Isaacs had a conference in Melbourne, but no announcement was made.
