BANKRUPTCY OF A HAWKER

DEPRESSION AND BAD WEATHER. OHURA BUSINESS FAILURE. There were only two creditors present at a meeting called at New Plymouth yesterday regarding the bankrupt ©state of Nicholas Saba, a hawker, of Ohura; The presence of three creditors being necessary for a quorum, the meeting was adjourned sine die by the deputy official assignee, Mr. J. S. S. Medley. Bankrupt’s statement showed that the amount owing to unsecured creditors was £951 6s. 6d. There were no secured creditors. The assets, being stock in trade at Ohura, were ■ estimated at £4OO, and book debts at £l4 17s. 3d., ,a total of £414 17s. 3d. < , .

In his written statement Saba said his business suffered through general de-* pression, shrinkage in trade and loss of goods by flood damage at Ohura. During the winter business had .been particularly bad and unsatisfactory, and bad weather prevented him from travelling with his goods. Ohura being a remote place, the procuration of goods had been expensive. The district had only a small population and while he was confined to doing business in Ohura through bad weather little was done.

His creditors had been informed of his position and he understood they were agreeable to accept his offer to pay £3O for pro rata distribution with the exception of A. Woolley, who took action against him. A distress warrant against him was enforced and he was ’ forced to file in. the interests of his creditors. Personal expenses in regard to the upkeep of his family and expenses ' of travelling from place to place had been heavy. He had seven children, said Saba, questioned by Mr. Medley. Reni had cost
