LARGE EXPORT INCREASE

DIRECT SHIPMENT OF PRODUCE.

GREATER OVERSEAS CARGOES. ,

The outstanding feature of the. year at the port waa’ the large increase in the exports, which totalled about 49,825 -tons.- The direct shipment of dairy produce and other refrigerated ca,rgo was the cauep of thia increase. Last year oversea* vessels took 34,456 tone of cargo, ! but in 1930 the amount had risen by over 25 per 1 cent, to 43,117 tons. This large increase in direct shipment* of produce is reflected in the number of overseas vessels which visited the port. This year 41 vessels, an increase of 10 on last year, carried Taranaki dairy produce from New Plymouthi ■ v.;

In previous years .an appreciable amount of dairy produce was shipped coastwise to large, overseas vessels at Wellington, and in; 1929.88.5 per cent, 'of the butter and-87 per cent, of the eheese w'ent from: New Plymouth in' by direct ship. This, year ©9 15-16 per 'cent, of the butter and about 95 per cent, of the cheese was sent direct. -No dairy produce, however, has been shipped coastwise since; April, so it seems probable that, in future the export of dairy produce will be practically all direct. ’ During tbe year 316,919 boxes of butter (including the Port Huon’s allot-ment)-have been spnt away from New .Plymouth by overseas vessels. This figure represents an increase of -nearly one-third on last year’s direct exports of butter, as during 1929 only 225,661 boxes left, the port direct. , /<. ~j > A record direct export of cheese is revealed in the year’s figures. An increase. of ‘ 33,629 crates,; or about- . 16 per cent. on . the 1929 cheese exports,' was sent from the port by; direct ship--ment.; . Inn' 193 d • 237,64! crates; (incluZ sive '-pf the "Port Huon’s ■:allotment); exported, while, in 1929 the figure wa* only crates. - " '// /> i. TWO SHIPS OVER 12,000 TONS. Although there has been a decrease in the number of overseas vessels trading to the port this year there has been an increase in the average tonnagp of the ships. In. 1929 71 overseas vessels put in at the port, but this year only 65 have arrived, but. there is a probability that , this number will be increased to 67 by the arrival of the Huntingdon on December 31 and the WaikaiVa on December 30. The average tonnage of the overseas ships trading at New Plymouth has risen from 7626 in 1929 to 7905 this year. Tonnage records have been broken this year, first by the arrival of the lonic (12,352 tons) and later by the Tamaroa 12,354 tons. However, the general tendency - appears to be towards larger - vessels. The total overseas tonnage, including that of the Huntingdon and the Waikawa, will this year be 530,487- tone, but last year when the number of vessels calling was four less the total was 541,423 tons. Some idea of the larger vessels trading at the port may be gained from the following table:— - ■ , . 1929 1930
