Their letter© sometimes contained little arithmetical’ sums relating to. some quite plausible discussion and having an entirely innocent /appearance. But in their code each of the ten digits represented ,a different’ letter’ of 9 the alphabet! Thus on one occasion there W£tf. a. .little-, sum .in simple addition which,, when the letters were substituted’for the figures, read like this r . . IF.L Y (FOR. YOU iR..... L I IF !E The puzzle is to reconstruct the addition sum with the help of the clue that I and O stand for the figures. 1 and 0 respectively.” This puzzle entertained them for a considerable time, and there was much discussion after they had found the answer as to the process of reasoning that should be employed. LITTLE LAUGHS. ONE LESS. (Pat, securing a free night’s lodging in a haunted house, was awakened by a ghostly voice, which moaned: “There’s only you and me—there’s only you and me.” ‘"Faith, an’ there'll only be yerself as soon as I can get me second boot on.” .was the reply. » ® .« • , ■ .
