PROVINCE’S EIGHTIETH YEAR
CHRISTCHURCH CELEBRATIONS

The eightieth anniversary of the Can* terbury province was celebrated to-day, cold, unfavourable weather curtailing the outdoor functions. Pioneers who arrived at Lyttelton in the first four ship* were entertained at various gathering! arid' a reunion was held at which the following message from the GovernorGeneral was read: Accept my warm congratulations on the celebration of the eightieth anniversary 'of the foiindsjtion of " the province of. Canterbury. Kindly convey friendly greetings to the pioneers who you will be honouring.’* An interesting feature of the celebrations was a journey .through the' main mainging at Christchurch. Seen among streets of the one stage coach now remodern traffic the coach with its driver, guard and passengers in old-time garb provided an oddly picturesque sight. Two veterans ehmi from the.
