ACCLIMATISATION AFFAIRS
TARANAKI HATCHERY REPORT. The report of the curator of the Taranaki Acclimatisation Society’s hatchfery, Mr. L. Barr, for the month states that many heavy floods had occurred, ■which tried out to the utmost all the work done at the hatchery. Everything Stood the test admirably, even the temporary sluices in the spawning race erected in Such haste proving effective for every stress. In his last report, Mr. Barr continued, mention was made of confervoid growth likely to be troublesome. . Looking round the district for duck weed another algae was discovered which looked like that which Herr Jaffe found preyed upon and completely destroyed other forms,of undesirable growth. Within a few days ot its introduction to the ponds green weed of thb Cannel kind 12 to 18 inches long rose to the top of the water and was dissolved. In a very short time the ponds were cleared entirely and had remhiped. eb ever since. If, this valuable jyorker was not Herr Jaffe’s actual weed it certainly had the same effect. It should be possible between seasons to go into the question of suitable fish passes at Opunake and Tariki, and rewarding the latter perhaps to collaborate with the Strafford society. With reference to the larger questions such as Stocking the rivers with additional foods, consideration niiglit be given to a suggestion for the introduction generally, of ■the minnow, roach and gudgeon. The first-meptioned would be valuable for sandfly areas.
Mr. Barr added that he was sorry to report a malicious act. . Some person kicked a hole in the pheasant run, allowing the large birds to get out. . Their tamenefes, however, enabled hiin- tb/gbt them back into the pens immediately, ;,.
