About the data of the arrival of the steamer Mararoa in New Zealand, 45 years ago, the contract between the Governments of New South Wales and Netv Zealand and the Pacific Mail Steamship Company of New York for the carriage of the San Francisco mails came to an end, and, as the Pacific Mail Company desired -to retire from that undertaking communications: w'ere opened between the Governments Of New South Wales and New Zealand, resulting in the Union Company taking up the contract and. carrying it on in conjunction with the Oceanic Steamship Company of ■San Francisco. The first trip from the colonies under the new contract was made by the Mararoa, she being diverted for that purpose immediately on her arrival in southern waters. Captain James Edie brought her out to Hobart, and took lief on to Sydney, where she ran a trial trip to test her boilers before starting the San Francisco service. After some time on that run the Mararoa was withdrawn to strengthen the intercolonial service for which she was built, and at a later period she and the Rotomahhfia were the Union Company’s special representatives in the lively competition that ensued when the Huddart, Parker Company put on the Warrimoo and the Miowera —a rivalry that led to speedy passages and cheap fares. It was at, that time that the yards were stripped off the Mararoa, the public believing that was done to ease her rolling. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS.
