FOUNDATION STONE LAID
HUMOROUS INCIDENT CLOSED.
WANGANUI COLLEGE HOSTEL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. . , ; Wanganui, Last Night. , The foundation stone of the hew technical college hostel was laid to-day by the Hon. 11. Atmore, Minister of Education, who received a golden trowel from the pupils and a .carved Maori cande from the contractors. . f . : The ceremony marks the close of a somewhat humorous episode which has been referred to as the “battle of foundation stones.” On the, eve of the l?st election Mr. J. G. Coates laid a stone, .but when his' party/was defeated Mr. Atmore with the reins of office in. hand altered the plans to give, a more pretentious building. The question then arose which stone would be laid and a inajority of the board of governors decided in. favour of the Atmore stone. There' developed a wordy .warfare in the Press which has been definitely settled now with the Atmore stone in place. ■. - - . • ■ . • Interesting exhibits at the ceremony were two plans, that of the decapitated hostel and the one now in course of.erection. .
