' •’ - , : - - - - '• ■ . i '-- f J Eight teachers of he New Plymouth Central and Infant schools who are leaving at the end of the year were farewelled by the. children,- fellow!teachers and members of the commit tee and the j Home 'arid School Association at the - ' - - // : w . r / / - ; , / . Central school yesterday. Several presentations were made and later those leaving were entertained .at afternoontea at the ’ infant school. Those leaving were Misses ’I. Deare, E. Mullon, P. / Harvey, T. Stonej M. Smith; D. Hodges, A. Simpson and Mr. W. L. Wagstaff. Tire . headmaster, Mr. D. P. - Evans, . said that .at . this time of the year :it was usual to say . farewell to. a few teachers,.. but. .this, year there: was a very large “batch” leaving. Changes were not good .for .the school. . However, they had to nio.ve. on. .while .two at-least were leaving, to. .ba married. ' - Referring, individually to those leaving Mr. Evans, said.that Misses Harvey and Mullan . had . come with a ■ fine record, from the. High. School, and they had proy-/ ed that they merited it; Both were out- ; standing, .probationersr. Next year they would go to training college at Auckland and Ee felt that they .would :do well; ■ • - • ■ ' \ Miss Stone, a probationary assistant, and Afiss" Sitripson,'/a substitute assistant, had' both' Been very diligent in their work. He regretted parting with,/them, blit next year it might be possible to have them' permanently. These teachers' had' been. privileged to spend 12, months -under - Miss Papps, where they , obtained the best possible training. ■ ' Miss ■ Hodges had been temporary teacher for two years and he hoped/ that it would be possible to retain her next year. Miss Smith'had done excellent work while she. had been at the school.-Miss,-Deare,-who for three' years had been in the ■main school, had also performed her - work , very ’ well and . had ' always aimed at character building. Without that no school work was a success. She • had' controlled her classes. in a motherly-and' 'kindly' way.', H« re-,- ■ - gretted her: departure veriy much. Mr; Wagstaff" had been at’ the school seven’ years, remarked Mr. Evans. He. remembered the pleasure it gave him when he learned of his first appointment . to the school. Previously he had experience of Mr. Wagstaff ? s excellent work at Inglewood. He recalled the mariner in which Mr. Wagstaff had entered, into his work during his first year. Since that time those present’ knew of/his successes in the scholarship and; pro- : ficieney examinations. r It had always been his practice to work with, the child- ; ren and to be friendly with! them. Mr. Evans said he. would be,'very"sprry to drop his association, with Mr. YY’agstaff jn connection with the school, -but.,he felt j that he had helped to uplift the school. The experience gained while at the Central school should be - of bene-: fit to him in ,his appointment/to the Ohura District High School. . , _ The chairmap; of the. school committee, Mr. F. A. Coleman, , said he was very sorry that: the -teachers were goirig away, but he .did not . regret it altogether as he hoped it would be for tliejr advancement. He referred to Mr. _Wagstaft’s excellent’ work, and congratulated him on his promotion to the Ohura District High School. . _ The chairinah of the Centra! Home-and School Association, Mr. A. F. Sandford, said he appreciated the work and. efforts of those’ who were leaving/, -Im particular he referred' with appreciation to 1 the. way in which; Mr. Wagstaff "had helped the Home arid -School 'Association by ; acting in beginning:, is -seriretary. ’ '' , ' .■' / The presentations were. made by Air. Coleman as follows:—Mr. travelling rug from the Central school, committee arid a suitease from the pupils. Geoffrey. Fairbrother farewelled Mr. 'Wagstaff on 'behalf of the Standard 6 pupils. Miss Deare> received a crystal jug, Miss Hodges, a . handbag and' Smith a crystal vase. . , ' . ' : The ’pupils ’ showed their appreciation of the teachers by cheering lustily..
