ENGLISH CHEESE MARKET
WIDE VARIETY OF MAKES. COMPETITION WITH DOMINION. ' f' ' V Some idea of the variety of cheeses on the English market with which the New Zealand article has to compete may be gained from a communication received by Messrs. Leonard and Son, of Auckland, from Mr. N. A. Leonard, who for some years has been engaged in the selling of New Zealand butter and cheese in England. In mentioning- the prices which°the various English and other cheeses command in comparison with the New Zealand product, Mr. Leonard expresses the opinion that New Zealand must do something to produce a. better quality cheese in order to get higher up the price scale. Writing at the end of October, Mr. Leonard quotes;.the/following prices:— Finest old English Cheddars, 120 s; finest September' (1929) make Canadian cheese, •108 s July (1930) make Canadian, 7bs; New Zealand: cheese,'white, 755; coloured 7ls; Australian, coloured, 68s to 695. At the time’of writing... new season s English factory cheddar cheeses, \yliich were Being-" produced in great numbers, were quoted at 625.; This would give some idea, of the variety of cheeses and their prices as sold in England, said Mr. Leonard, not to say ; anything of the Cheshire. Derby, Lancashire, Scotch Cheddars, Stiltons, Gorgonzolas, Grtiycre and a host of fancy packet chpes.es, as well as Dutch skimmed cheeses on the market. ■'
