PAYMENT OF LEVY
POSITION OF EX-SERVICEMEN. The question whether the Returned Soldiers’ Association- should advance the initial payment of 7s. 6d. toward the unemployment levy in cases of ex-service-men out of employment, who are unable to find the money, was discussed by the Auckland executive of the association ladt week. “This is a vital matter, and one which should be settled in the best interests of the association and the men concerned before the meeting closes,” said General Sir George Richardson, who presided. “There are many men who have not sixpense in their pockets and who have to find 7s. 6d. before they are able to receive any benefit.” Sir George said it might be suggested the Government should deduct the amount from the first week’s wages, but at present that was not possible. As far as the financial position of the association was concerned, it had to be remembered that when the unemployment scheme was working the. funds of the association would probably be relieved of much of the present burden, and the initial assistance given would thus be justified. • “The Government should take the initiative?’ said Mr. R. W. Wise. “If there are going to be hundreds unable to pay the first instalment, the Government will have to amend the Act or send them to gaol,” Mr. W. G. Camp expressed the opinion that if the association couid advance the money and arrange to have it refunded, it should do so. “Our constitution does not allow it, and our funds will not permit it,” said Mr. E. W. Inder. ; . It was decided to write to the Minister of Labour, pointing out that a large number of unemployed ex-servicemen were unable to pay the first instalment on the levy, and asking for an assurance that, they would not suffer from their inability to pay.
