Mr. Smith, who was about 41 years of age, was well-known in Taranaki. Born in Scotland he came to New Zealand as a young man and took up farming for a time in the Ratapiko district. Afterwards he'moved to New Plymouth and entered' the /motor trade, being proprietor of the Criterion'garage for ten or twelve years. Mr.- Smith was actively interested in the territorials, holding a commission both before and after the war. He saw active service in France, was shellshocked and- invalided home. He was an accomplished actor and Interested in amateur theatricals.. In 1925 Mr. Smith went to the South Island, where he Was engaged in the insurance business. He leaves a wife and two children.
