MR. H. W.-MARTIN APPOINTED. . From 33 applicants Mr. H. IV. Martin, New Plymouth, was yesterday appointed clerk to the Inglewood County Council in succession to Mr, R. B. Larson, who resigned his position ■at the previous. meeting. Mr. Martin, who is an old boy of the New-'Plymouth Boys’ High School, is accountant, to the New Plymouth. ■Harbour Board, a position he has heir, for two years. \ Mr. Larson thanked councillors tor the friendship that had been shovyn him during his seven years’ tenure of the position. He had always endeavoured to do his duty by the council, which he congratulated bn having formulated and energetically carried out a progressive policy. They had' certainly done thenwork well, especially as regarded .the road construction. The proportion of Crown tenants was much higher m Inglewood than in most other counties and that had led to considerable arrears of rates-^a mounting to about £2ooo—having t 0 be written off. It was, however, to the credit of the ratepayers in general that the arrears of rates were only a small matter. Exclusive of Crown tenants, the losses of rates had nardly exceeded three figures, . The chairman, Mr. A. Lorklll, m expressing the hope that Mr. Larson would have a prosperous future remarked that owing to the fall in tjie values of primary products it was absolutely essential that the work M the council should be done as economically as possible If the ratepayers could not get their rates they would not be able to pay.
