The roads, too, were in splendid order, and 'the staff had been arcatlv reduced. Dunng the next few month's there would be comparatively little expenditure and the position then should be much improved. The engineer -(Mr. 8. C. Judd) reported that the wet weather had hampered progress considerably, as well as playing havoc with-partly completed work. Roads reconditioned and strengthened by scarifying, new metalling and grading the shoulders after scarifying included Lepper North and South, Egmont North and •South, Upland, King, Windsor, Dudley East and West, Durham East and West, Norfolk East and West, Johns, Rugby, Suffolk, Kaimata, Kohete, Bristol, Junction and Otaraoa Roads. He suggested that 50 yards of stone should be,dumped mid-way up the Norfolk West Road for maintenance. The roads mentioned > were all thoroughly rolled with the three steam rollers, and with all this rolling
going-on the month's cdal consumption was naturally heavy. The Rugby and Dudley East Roads were in a very thin condition, and while these .roads were being ripped he .was compelled, if a good job was to be made, to purchase ijew metal without the council’s authority. The metal was obtained at the satisfactory price of ss. 6d r per cubic yard from W. Thomason for Rugby Road, and from the Inglewood borough at’4s. 6d. for the Dudley Road. The entire length of metalled roads under the council’s jurisdiction has be.cn p.ut into first-class condition. This work has' been carried out in under six months, or 130. actual woiking days, with an- average daily rate of 1J miles ■ of road, with the reduced staff. The task of top-dressing these reconditioned roads has now to be embarked upon, and the council’s authority was sought to excavate and where necessary to crush sufficient fine pit material to cover the. main metalled routes, which will have to carry the Christmas traffic —the Bristol, Everett, Tariki and Kginiata South Roads, and the North Egmont Road, Bristol and' Everett Rpads, from Mr. J. W.-Wellington s pit. In ebnnectipu with the Upland Road and Mountain Road surfacing proposals, plans, specifications and estimates in triplicate were dispatched to the Publie W-orks Department, Stratford, early in the month, .for its .approval, JjUt ;no , w ; <ird has been received. 1 .
