BOXING IN NEW PLYMOUTH
MEETING OF ASSOCIATION SUCCESSFUL YEAR RECORDED IMPROVEMENT IN FINANCE. The annual meeting of the Taranaki Boxing Association was held last night when Mr. W. N. Stephenson (president) presided. There was an attendance of’ over 20. A comprehensive report of the year’s workings, a resume of which has already been published, was read by the chairman of the executive. The balance-sheet showed that receipts,- had totalled - £4195 10s 2d, the principal items being gate receipts £4172- 6s 2d, sale of rights £lO, donations £9 9s; subscriptions £3 15s. Expenditure had totalled '£3*sl4 4s Sd. There was a credit balance of £933 19s 7d as compared with £IS6 19s lOd at the beginning of the year. The principal items of expenditure were purses £l4ll, rent £345 17? sd,,amusement,tax £369 Is. Id, Boxing .Council £225 Is, trophies, amateur expenses and, championship expenses .£164 ,9s? 6d, advertising and printing £202 8s 6d, legal expenses '7 £7B 13s 3d, referees £63 10s, Wages, cartage,: erection of. stage, etc., £l7l 0s 6d ; secretary, ,£126- 10s', entertainment' £-40.
The Hatton contest showed . a profit, of £5O Il's Id. Griffiths '£H)4 19s lOd, Doble £54 9s 7d, Crowle £52, 14s and £143 Os lid, Sarron £739 14s ;2d; There were- losses as’, follows:— Amateurs £34' 9s 4d,. Blooin £SS 15s. In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the president complimented the chairman of the executive on, its comprehensive nature, which he ‘considered evidence of the keen interest that had been taken in the\ affairs of . the association during the year. He was ‘not prepared, however, to agree that interest in boxing .was on the warie. The fact that the public appreciated good contests was shown by . the attendance 'at the Leckie-Donovan. bout and by the expressions of; regret from those who had not .attended the Ed-wards-Leckie bout. He hoped that it would be a long while before boxing would be on the wane, as it was - a sport that helped to build up the character of the youth. He referred to the splendid performances of Tommy Donovan in annexing the New Zealand featherweight championship—a well-merit-ed wjn. As one .who had been closely associated with the executive in'the conduct of i two tournaments he appreciated the amount of work it had to doi He congratulated, the executive on the firm stand that had been taken regarding the Sarron bout. » ‘ -
Air. E. Griffiths considered that the executive had done wonderful:work. Not. only had it succeeded .in maintaining the Interest of the public; the. state of the finances was a revelation. They, however, could not expect to accumulate funds so quickly in the future, and he agreed that their funds would have to be carefully guarded. . Air. E; Jackson congratulated the committee bn/the excellent way it 'had conducted the affairs of the association. As a member of the executive years ago he . expressed appreciation .of the vyork' of those who had stood -by ‘the association in its days of adversity. There was no doubt that by its policy of putting bn .such clean bouts the .association had the public with it. There were, some very promising amateurs inTaranaki who were a credit'■ to the sport and to the district. ' It was l resolved to convey to Tommy Dopbvan .- congratulations, on his' haying attained the proud /position of featlier,weight champion of New Zealand, arid to place on record the executive’s appreciation. He extended a' welcome to the new* members. , Arrangements were finalised for the Donovan-Edwards bout. Notification was received from Sammy Chapman that Edwards was- in active training and was looking forward keenly to the contest. ( The sub-committee .appointed to arrange for seating accommodation at the Coronation Hall submitted plans to seat 2100. The plan, which was' an,improvement ■on that for the Donovan-Leckie bout, was adopted. • • ' , -* j : Advice was received that three Wei-, lington boxers ~ were available to take part in the preliminaries, while W. Thurston, the Wanganui light-heavy-weight, .also applied for a bout. Six preliminaries were arranged as fol-lows:—-Norris (Wellington) v. R. Furze (Tikorangi), G. Thomas (Wellington) V. A. Mortori (New Plymouth), Alansfield (Wellington) v. L. Christiansen (New Plymouth), W. Thurston (Wanganui): v. R. Russell (Tikorangi), Kerr (New Plymouth) .v. E. Hunt, S. Davis (New Plymouth) v. AV.
