The British Government has issued a circular to the Indian Army, offering inducements to officers to’retire. » ' The statement is to the effect that there is an over-supply .of captains and also of majors and that there will be no opportunities of promotion for ten years to come. There are no openings at present and officers are offered higher pensions if they choose to take the course of retiring from the Army in tho near future while they are Still young enough to take up a career elsewhere. In order that the matter may be thoroughly understood the inducements will remain for the officers fpr the next two years. Since the war there has been ,too large a number of - captains and there are many officers Wlio cannot hope for any further promotion, because there are not enough higher commands for them all.
