High up on the southern slopes of Taranaki just off the Stratford-Opunake Road, lies the Makaka Domain, an area of 14 acres. For many years this was neglected, covered with logs, stumps and second growth just as it had been left after the bush-falling. A small plantation, however, planted by the Domain Board several years ago has developed well with strong, healthy trees from 20 to 30 feet high. About three years ago the Domain Board set to work energetically, to effect further improvements and the land was stumped, cleared and fenced ’and a belt of shelter trees planted completely around the area. To-day theland is growing a splendid crop of grass which is ready to be cut for ensilage. A metal roadway was constructed to. the entrance, a j distance of about 20 chains, from the main road and turnstiles were made to allow pedestrians to enter. . . , ’ . c The domain, the grazing rights ot which are leased, has been thrown open to the public. It is an ideal place for sports and school picnics. ' ' ■ : . Last winter 2000 young gum trees and numbers of young kauri trees weie Board responsible for the development consists of Messrs. R.
