BIRTH CONTROL PROBLEM

RESOLUTION OF THE BISHOPS THE DECISION MIBUNDERBTOOD, 'BISHOP AVERILL’S EXPLANATION ’ " "" nf ' z By Telegrwh.-rPreaa Association, Auckland, Dec,- 2. “The resolution of the Lambeth Conference in respect to birth control has been misunderstood and misrepresented in every way,” declared Archbishop Av? erill, on his return by the Marqma today, “The. whole idea of the report and resolution wag to condemn contraception, but one exception was made and that is what has been quoted. It was the reservation where the birth might have a very harmful effect upon the mother and might cause her death, the exception only to be made as a result of medical advice and a certificate. Although the resolution did not say so the underlying spirit was that in'such cases the-dispensation of the church should be granted, “Tfie bishops condemned the use ©f contraceptives for selfish ends or the pursuit of pleasure. and by unmarried persons. The bishops felt, that they should say something on this point and what was agreed to seems to me to be quite rational.” ' Archbishop Averill said he opposed the -resolution itgelf on account of its liability to' a misunderstanding when cabled in a brief form. The whole idea of the. conference was to raise the sex question to a higher plane and see that anything done in the way of control must- be done conscientiously, according to Christian principles. He regretted that some of the church’s enemies were misrepresenting the intention of the conference.
