DAY OF GOOD RACING

SIDELIGHTS AT TAKAPUNA JAMIESON TEAM’S SUCCESS. TRAINER AND JOCKEY CENSURED. (By Wire—Special to News.) , Auckland, Last Night. After showers th : s morning the weather was fine for the conclusion of the Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting to-day. The racing was again good and two first day winners in White Wings and Chief Jewel were again successful. There was a lengthy inquiry into the running of Amon Ra, who finished second. after the Rakino Handicap, and the trainer, J. T. Jamieson, was censured for not giving his rider more definite instructions. The jockey, E. Ludlow, was also censured for not riding Amon Ra more vigorously. On the strength of his good third in the Takapuna Plate on Saturday Karangapai was installed a solid favourite over Operatic for the Vauxhall Handicap. and he duly scored, although he just-got up at the finish to, beat an outsider. Merry Lu, who attempted to win from end to end, Vai marie, always handy to the leader, was, a close third and Good Idea fourth. Next to finish were Land Measure, King Swift, Great Emblem and Royal Survey. The winner is a promising three-year-old by Peach Brandy from Star Attraction, and is trained at Ellerslie by J. Chisholm. His finishing run -was a good one, as he was. a long way back early. Merry Lu surprised by staying on much better than usual, while Valmarie and Good Idea both ran sound races, always being in the picture. Operatic was a disappointment, failing to run on .after being well up most of the Way. REVERSE FOR INVESTORS. - Investors received a reverse in the Kawau Highweight Handicap when the favourites Trishna and Stonehenge failed to return dividends. The race proved a good thing for Luminary, who gained a break of five lengths in the first half-mile and stayed on .to win by a length and a-half from Patutahi, who beat Stonehenge by a short peck. Trishna was fourth and Glenstar fifth, the others all being well beaten. Luminary

usually runs his best races in front and when he was allowed to make his own race in tlje early stages he galloped in his best style to win well. Patutahi and Stonehenge were always closest to the winner and Patutahi, who was ah. outsider, stayed on the better • at the finish. Trishna never looked like a winner as he was well back early and his run was finished vlhen he got within striking distance of. the leaders at the turn. ' CARL IDEM WINS DECISIVELY ■ The Stanley Handicap vras decisively won by Carl Idem, who finished too strongly for the others when the pressure was applied in the straight. . The winner had not won for nine months but his prospects were not overlooked and he was /fairly solidly backed, although the actual favourites were,Gay Idea and Biddy’s Boy. Red Lion hopped out smartly and he led into the straight from Gay Idea, Carl Idem and Biddy’s Boy. In the run home Carl Idem beat Biddy’s Boy by a length and a-half, the fast finishing Tambourine being half a length back third, With Red Lion fourth. It was not a .good field but the winner raced like an improved horse. Red Lion was doing well in front to the turn and then stopped 'quickly. He should be a better horse for the race. Gay Idea was ridden with the whip in the first furlong after being, slow away and failed to go bn at the finish. 'She. should do better at the country meetings. ' WHITE. WING'S HAS GOOD RUN The Cautley Handicap was /remarkable for the wonderful run on the rails secured by White Wings shortly before the field reached the home turn. Awamutu and Leitrim were quickly in front from. King Ford and with • Lucy ■ Rose and White Wings several lengths behind the others in the rear. With slightly over two furlongs covered King Ford went up on/the inside of Awamutu and Leitrim and they raced abreast for another furlong, ahead of Royal Tea. Ne. .• the two furlong 'post White Wings made a sharp dash from the rear and went right through. on the rail’s to be in frbnt at the turn. After this she had no difficulty in winnjng from Royal Tea, who beat .Paganelli by a length. Lucy Rose was fourth and King Ford fifth. The winner may have won even if she had not secured''such a remarkable run, although she would not have found it easy. She was a good third fancy in the betting, Leitrim and Roya.l Tea being favourites. ROYAL DOULTON PERFORMS WELL The St. Andrew’s Handicap was .productive of a good finish, Royal Doulton, who has previously shown a partiality' for' the track, winning narrowly from Mosque. Royal Doulton gave some trouble at the start and was not in line when the tapes were released, los- • ing a couple of lengths. Eager Rose, the favourite, and Flying Prince made the early running, while Royal Doulton soon ran up handy ahead of Mosque. Royal Doulton dashed up to the leaders at the half-mile, where ' she and Eager Rose drew out to lead round the

bend fyom Flying Prince and Mosque. Round the turn Eager Rose weakened and Royal Doulton stalled off a challenge from Mosque to win by a neck. Eager Rose was two and a-half lengths away third and True Blood was fourth. Royal Doulton registered a smooth performance. ' Mosque ran his best, race for some time and should be worth watching at Taumarunui and at Te Awamutu. . CHIEF JEWEL SCORES AGAIN. As on the first day J. T. Jamieson supplied first and. second in the two-year-old event, the Rakino Handicap, in which he had three runners.' Saturday’s winner Chief Jewel was the favourite and he scored again in decisive fashion. After leading into the straight with Hoihoma, his stablemate, Anion Ra, finished on well to get second threeparts of a length ahead of Princess Bede. Speedmint was fourth and Hoihoma fifth.' The winner is'very useful and should continue to pay his way, although he may not' be really good. Anion Ra’s effort was a particularly good one'for a first start and it’ should be worth keeping in mind for Christmas. He is a half-brother to that good mare Prodice, and is by Limond, sb that he is bred the right way to •gallop fast. Amon Ra’s future is full of possibilities. FORM PROVES CORRECT. Form worked' out w e H j n u ' puke Hack Handicap as the three placegetters in the same class on the first day again filled. the although they reversed the order. C'lopton, Haviland and Manaw.henua were favoured and the summing up of the investors proved fairly correct ..as Alanawhenua just beat Clopton in & hot nnish. Sir Mond was right up third and Brampton was fourth.- The /winner is .on the improve and he would have been unlucky to lose for he Ayas checked on the rails at the turn and then had to come round three horses. Clopton ran | another solid race and. Sir Mond was also doing well under* his big. weight •at the finish. Haviland .and Spring Abbey ..went well to the turn, Spring Abbey being a likely improver. TI-TREE FINISHES STRONGLY.. Ti Tree completed a successful meeting for J. T. Jamieson by winning the Ngataringa Handicap, giving her trainer his fifth win and K. Voitre his fifth winning ride. Honiton and Sir Russell were favourites in a good betting race, with the winner at a good price. Tetrarchate and Honiton carried the field along to the straight with Ti Tree and Sir Russell in close attendance. Ti Tree came home strongly and gained the uecisjon j>y three-parts of a length from Sir Rdssell, who defeated Lady’s Boy by half a length. Nancy Lee was fourth and Honiton fifth. Honiton and Tetrarchate were made too much use of .in the early stages and failed to run on at the finish, where Ti Tree did well to score an overdue win for Air. C. B. Macindoe, ivhose colours hpve not been very prominent of late.
