SOUTH TARANAKI NEWS
SOUTH TARANAKI MOTORISTS. Matters of interest to motorists were discussed at the annual meeting of the South Taranaki Automobile Association on Monday night. It was stated that the reason for a service officer not saluting was that there was a dangerous road ahead, a trap or that the motorist was breaking some regulation. Motorists should stop and inquire why the service officer did not salute. Another speaker pointed out that in the event of a speed trap the officer would be breaking the law if he disclosed this. ■ A motorist should just drive carefully when a patrol failed to salute. A Stratford representative stated that in his district 200 members had had their lights focussed when the association had made arrangements last year. A speaker considered that one of the
most fruitful causes of accidents was badly focussed Head lights. Mr. Gibson said many silent policemen on corners were in bad positions. Mr. S. C. Tonks said a Transport Bill to come before Parliament would do away with silent policemen if it were carried into effect. Dr. W. M. Thomson stated that at the Tauranga camping ground they had an arrangement whereby electric light and small heaters were available to motorists at a weekly rental. These would be a great convenience at Ohawe and Hawera.
