CHRISTMAS AT KAPONGA

ARRANGEMENTS FOR CARNIVAL. ' A meeting of Kaponga business people took place on Friday night to arrange the Christmas carnival for the entertainment of children and parents of the country district. The chairman of last year’s carnival committee, Mr. W. G. Cran. presided over a fair attendance. He said that owing to the departure of the secretary no proper bal-ance-sheet had been prepared, but there appeared to be a credit balance of £4 15s. He had drawn up a modified scheme which, while embracing as full a programme as usual, would not involve such a large expenditure per member. In connection.with lighting for Christmas. Eve, the chairman stated the town board had agreed to supply the. usual lighting scheme, which would consist of five rows of coloured lights. Any business people requiring extra coloured lighting for that night would have to make their own arrangements. Business people are to supply their own greenery for decorating unless they have ho suitable conveyance, in which case arrangements can be made with the chairman. In the afternoon, mainly for the children’s benefit, there will be free picture entertainment, prior to which Father Christmas will arrive by motor-lorry -to distribute toys and lollies. In order io overcome a lot of dissatisfaction which arose last year in connection with the distribution of parcels to the children, the committee decided that each child this year should receive a'parcel on entering the town hall, and not be allowed to leave the hall until, all the children outside had entered the haJl. The Auroa Pipe Band’s services for the evening were gratefully accepted. The Kaponga Brass Band is also to be approached. The chairman and Mrs. C. H. Brewer were appointed canvassers for funds. Mr. H. A. T. Gallagher was elected secretary in place of Mr. J. S. Firth, who hadleft the district. The question as to whether business places should observe the Saturday of Christmas week as a holiday was discussed and it was decided to hold th© matter in abeyance in th© meantime
