JUDGING OF CALVES
BOYS AND GIRLS’ CLUB WORK. GOOD QUALITY OF THE ENTRIES. The season’s judging of the calf-rear-in" classes of the Boys and Gills Clubs in°South Taranaki was commenced yesterday when the Normanby, Ararata, Turuturu and Tokaora schools were visited. The judges were Messrs. H. R. Denize (condition), W. Pollock (dairy type), and R. Syme (charts), the organisation of the itinerary being in the hands of Mr. Syme. After the calves at each school had been examined and placed, the judges addressed the children, advising them in the best methods of care in rearing and pointing out by use of the calves the desirable points in good dairy stock. The judges expressed, pleasure at the general quality of the calves they saw and were particularly pleased, with the keenness of the children as shown in the number of entries. A feature which could not help but impress was the large number of small girls among the competitors at each school. Mr. Denize commented upon this in his address at Tokaora and expressed the hope that more boys would emulate the example set by these small girls in the care of calves. Judging will be continued to-day at Ohangai at 10 a.m., Whakamara 11 a.m., Mokoia 1 p.m. aud Hawera 2 p.m. The Meremere calves will appear at the group judging at Ohangai on December 12.
