ARRANGEMENTS FOR ASSISTANCE. For some weeks the Stratford Chamber of Commerce and the Stratford executive of the Farmers’ Union, acting in concert, have been making strong representations to the Agricultural Department to have a clerk or qualified assistant placed in the Stratford office of the department to eliminate the delays in the transaction of business that have been occasioned through the • inspector, Mr. W. Harris, being engaged in field work during the greater part of each day. Until recently the department refused to grant the requests made by the chamber and the union, but advice was received at Stratford on Saturday that arrangements have been made for the services of the assistant stock inspector at Hawera to be available to the Stratford office every alternate week, commencing from December. MIDHIRST NEWS. This month’s dairy payment was lOd per lb for butter-fat and Id. for casein. While the casein payment is the same as last month’s, butter-fat is Id lower. For the corresponding month last year suppliers received Is 5d for butter-fat and 2d for casein. Mrs. T. Laird was at home on Tuesday afternoon. Those present were Mesdames Walter Vickers, Schumaker, George Smith, Guthrie, C. Carroll, A, Anderson, Banning,. Langlands and A. Carroll. The two competitions were won by Mrs. J. L ■ _ Despite the deluge of rain during' the, morning and intermittent rain throughout the afternoon, the fete day held on the Avon croquet lawns on Thursday was happy and successful, there being a good attendance, of ■ members and friends. Competitions were: Golf croquet, Mrs. Butchart (Stratford); ladder croquet, Mrs. Knight (Avon) 1, Mrs. Bridger (Eltham) 2; bell, Mrs. Knight (Avon) 1, Mrs. Hill 2; French, Mrs. Butchart 1, Mrs. Hoskin, 2; trial, Mrs. Hill 1, Mrs. North 2; hidden prize, Mrs, Smith (Midhirst) ; length of string, Mrs. Bulman.
