THE PLUNKET APPEAL

NEW PLYMOUTH “BABY DAY” , TOTAL OF OVER £260 COLLECTED. Setting out on their annual “Baby Day” campaign yesterday morning the collectors and other workers of the New Plymouth branch of the Plunket Society did not expect to reach the record total of last year’s effort, but they found public support ‘still gratifyingly strong. The result, £265 17s sd, with a certain amount yet to come, was regarded as very satisfactory- in view of .present economic conditions. ■ The New Plymouth district, yvas canvassed by about 90 collectors additional to the- workers on the; stalls. The collectors, for whom the town had been Mocked out, secured, a generous response in the business’ area as well. The collection was organised by' the president, Mrs.. I. M. Kidd, and the district, nurses, Misses Petersen, Cartwright and Chandler. The secretary, Mrs. C. S. Mayer, carried out very complicated and 'heavy duties with distinction.

Apart from the collecting, an important section of the appeal was the conduct of a stall in Currie Street and a well-stocked shop in King’s Buildings, as well as a fine flower stall in the Vic-

toria League rooms. The sewing committee was represented by a great variety of well-made articles. ■Saleable goods of many- classes were provided generously by parents of Plunket babies. Cakes and garden produce filled further stalls and a toy stall was furnished by Mrs. A. R. Clow and Mrs. Prestney. A prize in one of the competitions was a young pedigree Aisation dog presented by Mrs. Stonnell. The collectors’ returns were checked and the financial details supervised by Messrs W. Brodie and A. McHardy at Plunket House. ■

The usual “egg day” was held at the schools qnd 215 dozen eggs were brought by children for the Currie Street stall. The stallholders, were:— ;

'Sewing stall,—Mesdames W. -C. Weston and W. R. Wade (convenors), -J. Scanlan, A. H. Featherstone, C. E. 'Williams, H. P. Ga’ay, F. H. Moore, and Miss Skinner.

Produce.—Mesdames W. Brisking (conyenor), D. LeO. Morgan, i-'A, F. Sandford, R. S. Halliwell and Miss Gleeson. Cake. —Mesdames P. E. Stainton (convenor) , J. L. Mander, F. H. Masters, W. Clarke, G. S. Millar and T. z H Bates.

Sweets.—Miss O. Firth (convenor), Misses O. Shaw, E. Blundell, N. Dell, Rutherford and Greig (2). Egg Stall.—Mesdames J., A. Valentine, (convenor),. Marsden,. Misses Clegg and Clark. •

Vegetable stall.—Mrs. C. E. Roebuck (convenor) arid Miss Faulkner. Toy stalk—Plunket Nurses, Mrs. Gillespie, Misses Davey, McCallum and Redman, '

Flower Stall.—Victoria Leaglie (Mrs. C. H. Burgess and committee). Plunket House. —Mesdames R. E. Fair-'fax-Cholmeley, T. Wilson and Hopkinson. ■ / .

Morning and afternoon tea were served at the Victoria League rooms, while the collectors were given refreshments on their return to Plunket House. In the afternoon a musical pro-gramme arranged by Mrs. Brodie was given at the Victoria League rooms. Vocal solos were given by Misses Turnbull and I. Home, and Mrs. Evers-Swindell, duets by Mr, and Mrs. C, B. Webster, recitations by Mrs. F. Brown and Miss Myra Wilson (Stratford). In addition to others mentioned the society received help from members of the Victoria League and of St. Luke’s’ (Bell Block) Guild, and it acknowledges the following donations; Messrs E. Carter £2 2s, A. F. Sandford £1 Is, Mesdames G. W. Haughton £1 Is, Eliot King £1 Is, F. White £l, C. H. Croker 15s, Mrs. J. J. Auld 10s. Free use was given of the shop in King’s Building, The Oakura district canvass resulted in £6, Tataraimaka £3 and Okato £3 17s lid. A playreading brought in £3 13s. Those competitions which were concluded resulted as follows: —Iced eake, Mrs. (or Miss) Barnes, correct length of string Syds 9in, guessed Byds Ilin; dinner, Mr. John Quin, correct length of string 2yds 20 Jin, guessed 2yds 18 Jin; nuts in battle, wheelbarrow won by Mrs. Cartwright, correct number 244, guessed 232.
