USE OF ST. HELEN’S HOMES

EXPLANATION BY THE MINISTER. “By Telegraph.-—Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 15. In an interview in reply to Tecent criticisms of St. Helen’s Homes the Hon. J. Stallworthy, Minister of Health, said it had never been the homes’ function to provide for all maternity cases throughout the Dominion. He made it clear that hospital boards were responsible for this Work, St. Helen’s Homes having been founded for training midwives and the accommodation of the requisite number of midwifery cases at a moderate fee. It was hoped that in future the homes 'would be recognised more as model training schools than as institutions for the handling of maternity cases generally The Minister said the department was endeavouring to introduce the eight hour day in the homes as soon as possible' and an effort was being made to give trainees a day off each week. This would take a little time but conditions were being improved as finance permitted.
