play for such period as he may consider necessary. These provisions shall be strictly enforced, 'and play shall never be suspended for the purpose of allowing a player ,to recover his strength or his wind/Th- umpire shall be the sole judge of intentional delay,' and after giving due warning he may disqualify the offender.

No player will be allowed to wear boots or shoes with heels,' spikes, or nails, without the consent of the referee. Entries must reach the secretary, Mr. D. Murray Kean, Wellington on or before December 15. The draw will be made at the office of the secretary bn December 17. NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB’S OPENING/ The outstanding tennis event in Taranaki .last Saturday was the official opening of the New Plymouth Lawn Tennis” Club. There was a large ■ and representative, gathering .of members and visitors present to whom a welcome was extended .by the president (Dr. G. Home). A pleasing feature in connection with the club was the fact that already 30 new members had been enrolled, and there is prospect of a further increase of' another •20 . players. ■ A trophy has been donated by Dr. Home for combined handicap- doubles, which it is hoped will be _ > finalised before Christmas. The secretary (MD A. H. Richards) and Mesrs. .C. H. Strombom and C. Saxton controlled friendly timelimit games during the afternoon in a capable manner.. • ■ The club has been unfortunate in the loss it has sustained this year of two of its outstanding members—Messrs. W. L. Wagstaff and J. B. MacPherson. The former, .lyho has been transferred, from New Plymouth to Ohura, has been connected with the club for the past, seven years and during that time has served on the committee almost continuously and has also, been secretary 'for' ths Taranaki Lawn' Tennis Association’s annual.-tournament on, ;two occasions. MacPherson,' who .has left for Auckland,’took a'prominent part in club and provincial tennis. Last season he represented Taranaki’.against Wanganui in a Christie Cup match and played for North Taranaki against South Taranaki at Hawera. The first round of the South Taranaki inter-club competitions, commences tomorrow. In the. A. grade matches Waverley will play Pa tea, at.Waverlcy; Hawera will play Manaia, at Hawera; and Eltham will play Sportsdale (Stratford), at Eltham. Park (Hawera) has a bye. The following will compete in the B grade: Patea v. Waverley, at Pa tea; Manaia v. Hawera, at Manaia; Park v. Stratford, at,Park.

The official opening of the Fitzroy Tennig Club will take place to-morrow afternoon.
