VALUE OF LEASEHOLD FARMS.

SIX-DAY HEARING IN STRATFORD.

Arbitration proceedings in connection with the valuation of the tenant’s improvements on 16 education leasehold farms in the Stratford, Midhirst, Toko and Ngaere districts and in the matter of fixing the ground rent of these properties for a further term of 21 years as from June 30 next have been in progress at the Stratford Courthouse for the past sb; days, Proceedings were private. Mr. J. B. Richards, Stratford, was arbitrator for the lessees and Mr. C. D. Dickie, Patea, for the Crown lessor. Mr. W. G. Riddell,' formerly senior stipenfiary magistrate, Wellington, was umpire. With one exception all the properties concerned were dairy farms and a good deal of local interest has been aroused by the issues under consideration. The award will be announced at a later date. In all 25 witnesses for both parties were examined, Mr. C. H. . Weston, Crown Prosecutor, New Plymouth, appearing as council for the Crown, while Mr. A. Colemgn, Stratford, conducted the eases of the lessees. In the event of the two arbitrators failing to agree in fixing the value of improvements or. the renewal rental, these will be determined by Mr. Riddell.

STRATFORD BUSINESS WEEK.

EMPIRE AND DOMINION INDUSTRY.

Mr. J. Hassell, Wanganui, is to be asked to act as judge of the window dressing competition ,to be. held in connection with the Empire and New Zealand, Industries Week at Stratford from November 22 to November 29 during the 21,at anniversary of the Stratford A. and P. show. This decision was reached at a meeting of the business men’s committee .yesterday when Mr. E, Carryer presided. There were also present Messrs. R. H. White, H. T. Cooper, J, Walker, W. Hoskin, J, Orr, J. Petrie and W. D. Young (secretary). It was agreed that entries in the window /display competition should be judged on November 22 and that judging by the public on the special ballot forms should close on November 29. Mr. Hassell’s decision, of course, would not be made known until the public judging for the substantial prizes offered had closed. . ■ ... ?■ Mr. Walker suggested that an entertainment might be held at the end of the week, when the winners of prizes could be announced. This suggestion met with general favour and after a little discussion was adopted, further arrangements being left to Messrs. Walker and Petrie. • - ,' The possibility of surplus funds was discussed, a decision to donate any surplus to the Stratford Hospital Board for the provision of Christmas cheei- being reached. Members considered this action would give a stimulus to the week. Two banners bearing the slogan “Stop in Stratford” 'are to be suspended across Broadway at the northern and southern entrances to the town. Tlr.j idea was adopted on the suggestion of Mr. Cooper, who mentioned that good publicity could thus be obtained, especially in view of the large number of cars that would be passing through and into the town during the show. If it were found, that on winding up the affairs of the week the committee had not sufficient funds to pay for the calico to make the banners, Messrs. R. H. White and J. Walker offered to donate the material.

MAT AH DISTRICT NEWS.

Two serious slips, one at Towhai Point on the Matau saddle, have held up car traffic for a couple of days. The settlers have had to use horses and sledges to cart cream over these obstructions to a waiting cream lorry at the top of the hill. A gang of Public Works men is clearing the road. A committee of ladies is contemplating starting a series of Saturday night dances. Shearing has started but is being much interrupted by weather. Last Friday was an exceedingly stormy day. one of the worst experienced this y ”t, Rivers and creeks were in high flood, and most of the access section bridges were under water. The average docking percentage for the district was well over 92 per cent. In some paddocks the majority of sheep had twin lambs. Mrs. K. Mumby is visiting Inglewood.

GENERAL ITEMS.

The winners of the euchre prizes at the Holy Trinity Church sale of work on Tuesday night were Mrs. Irving 1, Mrs. Stallard 2, Mr. M. Murray 1, Mr. Reader 2. . Prizes for the competitions were won as follow: Box of chocolates, Miss W. Scott; three-pound tin of toffee, Mrs. Sole; cake, Mrs. G. Hall; bridge set, B. Joyes; doll, B. Bishop; raffia basket, Sirs. Godkin; box of sugar, Mrs. H. E. •Spence. Among the stallholders was Miss N. Thorpe. The final dance of the season at the Mangatoki hall was very successful., there being a large attendance of visitors from Stratford, Eltham and Hawera. The music was played by Sait’s orchestra with extras by Miss Brown and Mr. Winter. Monte Carlo dances were wmi by Miss R. Carter and Mr. Linn and Miss Nicholas and .Mr. Stewart.

ELTHAM THEATRE TALKIES.

“HIGH SOCIETY BLUES.”

“High Society Blues,” showing at the Eltham Theatre to-night, is a fine musical romance featuring Janet .Gaynor and Charles Farrell of “Sunnyside Up” fame. The production is as good as “Sunny Side Up” and has live song hits, “I’m in the Market for You,” *'l Don't Know Y’ou Well Enough l*or That,” “Eleanor,” “High Society Blues,”. “Just Like a Story Book.” The music is most charming and beautifully reproduced with a pretty story as background. One of the outstanding features is Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell in ukulele, duets. The /rocking in-** tome scenes is gorgeous.
