DECREASE AT PLYMOUTH.

INCREASE IN PETROL DUES.

A reflection of trade conditions and the state of the overseas buying market is shown in the Customs returns from the port of New Plymouth for October and for the ten months just ended. Receipts from ordinary Customs duties have dropped nearly onequarter for the month compared with October, 1929. Since the beginning of the year increases have been shown in January, March and June. Details for the month are:—

Decrease, £9704 7s 3d. Excise duty on beer totalled £lO4 16s last month, a drop of ..£76 ,15s 9d from £lBl Ils 9d for October of last year. 1 The figures for the first ten months of the year are more satisfactory from the department’s point of view. No duty was collected in May, 1929, and this would be partly responsible for the discrepancy of £192 19s. Details are:—

PETROL RETURNS INCREASE.

The petrol tax returns for the past month show an increase of £9BO 2s 2d on the amount collected during the corresponding moffth of 1929. In October, 1930, the petrol tax netted £2629 16s lOd, as compared with £1649 14s 8d for October, 1929.
