NGAMOTU BEACH SOCIETY

ANNUAL MEETING PARTLY HELD. IMPROVEMENTS BY COMMITTEE. Probably owing to other meetings and to the fact that shipping in port was ■being worked, there was only a small attendance at the first annual meeting of the Ngamotu Beautifying and Beach Improvement Society in the palladium last night. Mr. R. Glengarry presided. The chairman suggested that the election of officers should be postponed a week to enable the appointments to be made by a larger meeting. The annual report, already published, was adopted. On the motion of Mr. J. S. S. Medley, seconded by Mr. G. Roper, Mr. Glengarry was re-appointed chairman and Mr. A. E. Wood secretary. The other officers will' be appointed next week. Mr.' Roper explained it was the intention of the committee to build a wall on the seaward side of the plantation next to the east of the pavilion and a proposal was to be put before the public to make provision for shelter for picknickers on the western - side. The committee desired to make this beach as pretty as, the others in the town aud the support of the public was wanted. He hoped that the adjourned -meeting would show, that this support .was there. The Seaside Resorts Company had met the committee in every possible way. There had been difficulties, but they were of the kind that could be smoothed out at a round table conference.

The chairman said thanks were due to Mr. P. E. Stainton for his efforts towards obtaining the subsidy. Mr. Staintoii said he had- “only done what was due from him as' a member of the committee. He considered full '••alue had been obtained for the work done. A pleasing feature was the way Gio company and the committee had cooperated. He was sure the committee had the support of the public in its efforts to popularise the beach. On behalf of the Borough Council he thanked the committee for what had been done. ’

Speaking on behalf of the company Mr, R. J, Deare said there had never been any question of the two bodies not pulling together. Misunderstandings had been cleared away. He congratulated the committee on what had been done. He advised them not to attempt too much at once, but to go steadily. The company had found it was a mistake to bite off too much in the beginning, and thus saddle itself with a big liability.

In reply to a question regarding the result-of the deputation to the Harbour Board the secretary said the board had informed the committee it had set up a committee to deal with any matters connected with the beaches.

Mr. Stainton considered it highly desirable to have a conference between the Harbour Board, Seaside Company and the society to discuss matters of mutual interest. He believed the tenure of the beach was secure for some time.. It was decided to write thanking the Borough Council, particularly the works committee and the engineer, for assistance given. Tho meeting was adjourned for a week.
