A London cablegram reports the death of Captain William Colbeck, a member of Borchgrevinck’s expedition to the Antarctic from Melbourne in 1894. Mr. Arthur Moore (Brisbane), Mr. D. C. Halley (Wellington), Mr. W. D. Wohlmann. (Wellington) and'Miss D. Aitchison (Wellington) are among the guests at the Criterion, New Plymouth.
The death of Lord Brotherton at the age of 74 is reported in a cable from London. He-was for a term Lord Mayor of Leeds and owned extensive chemical manufacturing plants. ■The Taranaki Education Board placed on record its appreciation of the services of the late Mr. A. T. Main, for many years associated with educational matters at Mokoia, and expressing sympathy with his widow and family in their bereavement.
The death is reported at Madrid of General Weyler, aged 91 years. He was known as “the butcher of Cuba” owing to his severe methods in his repressing a revolt there. His actions and the blowing up of the American warship Maine in Havana harbour led to the intervention of .the United States and the Spanish-American war in 1898.
Miss L. Finnerty, infant mistress at the Eltham school for a number of years, has resigned her position and will retire on superannuation as . from March 31. In accepting the resignation with regret, the Education Board yesterday placed on record its appreciation of her splendid work in the cause of education.
'•'he death occurred in Christchurch en Tuesday of the Rev. James Russell Wilford, aged 27, the eldest son of Canon J. R. Wilford, Christchurch. Mr. Wilford was an old boy of Christ’s College. He entered Christ’s College, Cambridge, in 1923, and graduated in 1926 after a brilliant career. He was ordained at Trinity in 1927, with a title to the parish of St. Barnabas, Southampton. 111-health compelled his return to New Zealand last year.
