RELIEF OF UNEMPLOYMENT
Bc/aRD to WORK NEXT MONTH.’
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Wellington, Last Night. Another large deputation of unem-ployed-waited on the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, asking for immediate action by the Government in order that the desperate distress of many of the men could be relieved.
The Minister said he would place the case immediately before Cabinet. He announced also that he hoped the Unemployment Board, would be functioning next month. He hoped that within a Week after November 7 he would be able to announce the personnel and the. board would set to work immediately, and with £lOO,OOO provided by the Government it was hoped work would be found in a very short time. The Minister denied absolutely and emphatically that the Government intended to “sack” hundreds of men as soon as the session ended. He sympathised with the men in their efforts to obtain work because he believed none in the room wanted charity, and he hoped the board would aid them in finding that work.
