SATURDAY’S FRIENDLY GAMES PREPARING FOR SHIELD PLAY. WAREA CLUB’S OPENING DAY. The shield competition for bowling in Taranaki does not begin until November 1, but all the New Plymouth greens were busy on Saturday afternoon, when the members took the opportunity given by the fine weather to practice for more serious games. In a few cases friendly inter-club games were played. While the majority of greens were inclined to be heavy they generally played well. OPENING DAY AT WAREA.
The Warea Bowling and Tennis Clubs opened the season on Saturday. THere was a large attendance, visitors from Rahotu and New Plymouth being present. Mr. C. Muir, president of the Warea Club, welcomed the visitors and Mrs. Muir threw the first jack and bowled the first bowl amidst applause. The results of the games were:— H. Chapman, E. McEwan, a!

At the conclusion of the bowls Mr. W. C. Green, Rahotu, returned thanks for the manner in which the visitors had been entertained and extended an invitation to all to attend the opening of the Rahotu green on October 25.
BOWLING AT WEST END.
At the West End bowling green a rink consisting of members of . the borough staff met a rink composed of excouncillors. The climatic conditions militated somewhat against the pleasure of the game, and at the same time adversely affected the standard of play. The competition was a close one, excouncillors being the victors by a margin of one point, the scores being exeouncillors 10, staff 18. Following are the details:— Ex-councillors —A. E. Watkins, T. RESULTS OF THE GAMES.
The bowling season at Auroa was opened on Saturday in the presence of a number of local and visiting bowlers from Hawera, Manaia and Pihama. Although the weather was not very favourable and a. heavy, fall of hail occurred before the games commenced, three rinks participated in games. The president, Mr. W. J. Bradford, welcomed the visitors. Afternoon tea was dispensed by Mesdames A. C. Johnstone aiid L. Corey. Mr. S. Anderson replied on behalf of the visitors.

VOGELTOWN BEATS PARITUTU. A friendly match between the Vogeltown and Paritutu clubs was played on the Paritutu green, the visitors winning by eight points. In the absence of the president, Mr. W. W. Thomson, Mr. F. Wallis welcomed the visitors and
