KORU-KIRIHAU NEWS

LIGHTING THE KORU HALL.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

The Koru Hall Committee met on Monday for the purpose of closing its accounts after the recent social season. It was found that there was a balance of some £9 in hand, and it was decided to proceed with the installation of electric light in the hall as soon as oppor- ' tunitv offered. Final arrangements were left in the hands of the chairman, Mr. I ■R. J. Yeates. Some discussion took place as to the advisability of placing . a liHit over the main door, but it was considered that the extra expense would g be justified by the added convenience tn c inelement weather. fi SIX-A-S'IDE FOOTBALL. . The Kiribati Schools junior football team recently visited Koru to play the annual inter-school match. The game, played six-a-side, was keenly contested, and, although the final scores proved Koru the victoi. the match was by no means one-sided. Playing for Kirihau were Norman Payne (capt.), Ron. Payne, Arthur Janies, Micky James, Gordon ■Payne and Joe Smith. Koiu was Represented by Erie Proflit (captain), Leslie Green, Leslie Grey, George Grey, •Sid Bishop and JeiT Sharpe. At the conclusion of the game the members j of both teams were entertained to luncheon by the ladies of the district. Both captains returned thanks for this hospitality and it was a happy crowd of boys which departed in Mr. Proffit’s car late in the afternoon, leaving another cheering group at the gateway. The thanks of the teachers were conveyed to Mesdames J. Blakely, G. Green and H. J. Keys, and to Miss K. Looney for taking charge of meal arrangements. MATCH FOR THE .MACE CUP. Five boys from the Koru School recently made the trip to Omata in order to take part in a return football ■match between Omata and a combined Oakura-Koru team. Playing with greater dash and showing a better understanding of the principles of the game, the combined team succeeded in. making the match much mole even than upon the previous occasion, but was again defeated. The Mace Cup thus finds a home al Omata for the next twelve months. ' The game, which was refereed by Mr. E. Andrews, was played ■under adverse conditions, steady rain falling all the time, and the boys were grateful for the afternoon tea generously provided by the parents and friends of the Omata School. The rival captains expressed their appreciation of this kindness, at the same time voicing the hope that the schools would, in the near future, be meeting on the cricket field. Messrs G. Bell and F. Proffit conveyed to Omata the Oakura and Koru boys respectively. ( KIREHAU SCHOOL COMMITTEE The Kirihau School. Committee held its monthly meeting last week, there being present Messrs F. Cribb (chairman), E. Giddy, L. V. Payne (secretary) and A. M. Wilson (master). It was decided to purchase for the school library a children’s encyclopaedia set. ■ It was decided to approach Mr. F. Dennis with a view to his filling the vacancy in the committee caused by the resignation of one of the original members. ■ INTERESTING DEMONSTRATION The recent ragwort eradication demonstration held on Mr. W. Revells farm was well attended by farmers of the district and proved both interesting and instructive. At the conclusion of the demonstration, Mr. Sutton expressed himself a.s being prepared to answer questions, and many of those present availed themselves of the opportunity. SCHOOLMASTER PROMOTED. General regret is expressed throughout t'he district at the news of the imminent departure of Mr. A. M. Wilson, who has been promoted to charge of the Rawhitiroa School. The residents of the district are tendering a farewell social evening to Mr. Wilson in the near future. An excellent programme is being arranged and every endeavour put forth to make the function worthy of the occasion. . ELECTRICITY RETICULATION. The New Plymouth Borough Council’s lorrites are making frequent’ trips up •the Koru Road, bearing loads of transmission line poles. All along the road, too, great activity is being displayed; pine trees which have guarded the fields •for many years are being felled to make •way for the wires, which will shortly carry power to the farmers at the head of the road. OPAKU RESERVE PROPOSAL. ’ The Koru School Committee held its bi-monthly meeting on Monday. There were present Messrs G. Green (chairman), M. Sharpe (secretary), J. Blakely, G. Meredith and H. Looney, and H. J.-Keys (master). A resolution was ■passed expressing indignation at the Parliamentary Recess Committee’s proposal that the Opaku Reserve, together ■with accumulated funds, be transferred to the control of the Victoria University College. Copies of this resolution are to be forwarded to the acting Prime ■Minister, the Minister of Education and the Taranaki Education Board. Instructions were received from the electrical department of the New Plymouth Borough Council with regard to trees in the school grounds which border the main road. The matter of their removal has been referred to the Education Board. GENERAL ITEMS. Mr. W. M. Dill-Macky, instructor in agriculture to the Taranaki Education Board, visited both the Kirihau and the I Koru School on Thursday in connection with the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club’s work. Entries have been received from both schools. The board’s workmen have also been at work on the Koru .School, which is shortly to be repainted and renovated. A transformation has been wrought in the interior. A ’mild epidemic-of influenza doubtless. originating in the recent inclement weather, .has swept through the district,- very few families being able to claim complete immunity. The outbreak has played havoc with school attendances ■ and farm- work, and unless the weather . shows . some improvement in the near future, the situation bids fair to become serious. Following upon the recent fire on Mr. L. Hart's property, a new house is making its appearance, at Koru. This should be completed very shortly, and Mr. and Mrs. Hart will soon be taking up. their ! residence. This is the second new building in the district within the last three i months, Mr. M. Sharpe’s modern bungalow on the upper, Plymouth Road havi ing only recently been completed. The football season being now de- • finitely at an end, the thoughts of the local school children are turning to , cricket. Unfortunately material for the game is not al. present available. The ) committee has decided to fake up a subscription so that, the necessary pur- ) chases ma.v be effected. Messrs Keys and Wilson have received

from Mr. L. O. Hooker an appeal for subscriptions to the Pdrirua Mental Hospital radio fund. Subscription lists have been opened -at both schools. Mr. G. Green had the misfortune recently to lose two valuable cows. The animals had evidently 'become impregnated with the prevailing fighting spirit, and when grazing in a field some distance from the honiestead, fought so savagely that they fell over a nearby bank, and were found sonic, time lutei, both .with their necks 'broken. PERSONAL. Mr. J. McCurdy, Kirihau, paid a visit to Auckland during the week-end, making the trip on his motor-cycle. Miss O. Simmonds was a recent visitor to Kirihau. Mr. F. J. Proflit has made a. good recovery from his recent indisposition. Airs., G., Green has made a good recovery from her recent illness.
