HAWERA ITEMS

On Tuesday afternoon All's. H. R. Kemp was hostess at tea, when Mrs. C. H. Washer, Mi‘«. W. G. Strange, Mis. Winks, Mrs. Leslie J. Bull, Mrs. Bardsley, Mrs. Cordery, Airs. Wylie and Aliss AlcDonald were among her guests.

Air. and Airs. Bavin have returned) from a motor tour of the north, having visited the Waitomo Caves and Rotorua. They have taken a cottage at Ohawe for the summer.

The play-reading circle of the XX omen’s Club gave a most enjoyable evening on Monday, when the amusing play, "This Woman Busiqess,” was read. Airs. R. F. Page acted as stage manager, reading directions, and the following readers interpreted the play: Aire. VV. A. O'Callaghan, Miss McLean, Airs. Clem. Trotter” Aliss Dorrie Corrigan, Miss Dingle, Aliss Betty Ryan and Aliss May Burgess. Among those present were Alesdames Powdrell, Geo.. H. Ryan, Duckworth, AVoodward, L. J, Bull, Alurray Page, A. K. Caplen. Following the reacting a dainty supper was served.

Airs. Riddiford arrived in Hawera on Tuesday evening’s express from Alarton, where she had Been visiting her daughter. She is staying at the Central Hotel.

On Alonday afternoon Mrs. 'Welsh entertained a few friends at tea and looking round her delightful garden, which is now at its best. The hostess received her friends attired in a pretty blue figured crepe de chine afternoon mode. Tea was served in the sitting-room, which was charmingly arranged with large bowls of pale pink and white azaleas? Alesdames Charlie Bayley, W. O. Williams, Arthur. Coleman, G. J. Bayley, W. A. Mrs. Dickie left on Wednesday for New -Plymouth, where she is the guest of Mrs. D. McKay.

A very enjoyable flag bridge evening Was held at the Women’s Club on Thursday. Among those playing were Misses McLean, Dingle, Caplen, !Mesdames Dew Caplen, Channing Tonks, Kemp, Morpeth, Scott, Charlie Bayley, Harrop, A. E. Wills, Wylie, W. M. Winks, F. W- Sutton, P. O. Veale, Dale, Payne, George Meyrick, Alfred Coleman (Stratford), T. R. Overton, Duckworth, McL’Dowie,' B. Douglas, A. E. Stevens, Jobson, Misses Molly and Anne Page, McDonald, M. Barr, Hillier, and Ingles (2). The prizes were won by Mrs. Harrop, Miss McLean and Miss Barr. # * # *

Mrs. Meredith has returned from a week spent in Wellington as the- guest of her sister, Mrs. Boyle.

Mrs. Sutton and Miss M. Sutton entertained a few friends at tea yesterday afternoon, when Mesdames W. Jansen, P. Bond, J. Y. Hall, Meredith, Ablett and McKenzie were among those present. 'Mrs. Sutton wore a toilette of black silk and silk lace, while her daughter's frock was a pretty Chocolate brown satin with coffee coloured jabot. v

FUNCTION AT NORMANBY.

Friends to the number of almost 100 gathered in the Normanby Town Hall on Monday evening on the occasion of the twenty-first birthday of Hilda, eldest daughter of Mr. T. Lloyd, jun. Dancing was kept up to an early hour, Miss Mabel Guy and Mr. T. Guy providing excellent music. Extras were played by Misses D. Nicholas And B. Seed, Mr. Howe-Giles and Miss Noonan. Miss Thelma Gibson and Mr. A. Galloway contributed several delightful songs. Following supper provided by the ladies, the cake, which was made by Mrs. Meredith, Hawera, aunt of Miss Lloyd, was placed in the centre of the hall and Miss Lloyd, accompanied by .Misses Ivy and Myrtle Parslow, T>. Brisco and H. Franklyn, proceeded to cut and distribute it. Toasts were then proposed, Mr. A. Galloway proposing that of Miss Lloyd and Mr. George Gallo wav that of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Lloyd, sen., and Mr. Thomas Lloyd, jun" Mr. A. Galloway then presented to Miss Lloyd a wonderful array of presents displayed upon a table on the stage. Mr. Galloway instanced the popularity of the guest and all joined in singing ‘For 'She’s a Jolly Good Fellow.” Mr. T. Lloyd jun. and Miss Hilda Lloyd replied. Among those present were Mesdames T.
