TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Masterton races to-morrow. # * * * Acceptances for the Wellington meeting close to-night. * # # * A forfeit for the Harcourt Cup is due to-night. **• * * Painkiller, who won at Timaru yesterday, is brilliant over short distances. By the Phalaris horse Shambles, Painkiller is bred for speed, and should do better later on. * * * # Compris, a four-year-old gelding by Kilbroney from Lady Hatina,. is on the 1 up-grade. He is still a maiden, but his second in the Timaru Cup was attractive. * '. * # # * Compris is closely related to Solferite and Best Friend, and like all Kilbroney stock should improve with age. # * # * ■Since the Taranaki Hunt meeting, Lady Lulu, the sister to Valkon, has improved out of all knowledge. She is engaged in the maiden event at Waverley and track-watchers will be surprised if she gets beaten. *** / * “Pat” Hobson’s luck is still out. He broke his collar-bone when Lin Arlington crashed at Otaki last week. Hobson recently resumed riding after a bad spill off Mister Gamp on whom he won and then lost at Wanganui. * # * * Nippy had a' hip “down” before A. Neale took him in hand, and it is not surprising that he “conked” out first time up. * * « .# The heavy going at Otaki beat Melissa, but she looks none the worse for her races and should make amends. # # * # Joyspear is a fair hack and, though on the small side, is solid. He is b&ing freely mentioned in connection with the Waverley Cup. In the past Joyspear has not always been lucky, but a win for Owner R. J. Morris cm Labour Day would be very popular. ♦ # # • . Mr. Morris races his horses over battens and country as well, and when he fancies his chances all are invited to participate. ■

That good middle-distance mare Bright Glow; is moving" along attractively at Hawera, and when t'he tracks become firmer, she will again be in the limelight. «*" # * Orazone is another Hawera mare on the upgrade, and Trainer Fryer’s mare has a great chance at Wayerley. Orazone likes the heavy going and she will get it on Labour Day. Winning Jockeys. # # * * Hector Gray’s six wins at Dunedin placed him at the head of the winning jockeys’ list with IS successes. Then come A. E. Ellis 14, T. Green 10, B. H. Morris 9, H. N. Wiggins <» and H. Goldfinch 8. “DOWN THE LINE.” THE MASTERTON MEETING. (By “Paritutu.”) The Masterton Racing Club’s spring meeting,, which takes place to-morrow, promises to be a good sporting gathering, good fields being carded for all events, and the leading horsemen of the Dominion being engaged for various runners, while report says that the track is in good order, as is usual at Opaki at this time of the year. The principal officials are: Handicapper, Mr.‘H. Coyle; starter, Mr. C. O’Connor; judge, Air. W. P. Russell. The first race starts at noon. Interest Will be taken in the two-year-olds figuring in the opening event, the Nursery Handicap, a four-furlong flutter, in which 16 are carded. The aristocrat of the field will be Esteem, the three-quarter brother to Commendation, and there are other well-bred ones like Cottesmore (Hunting Songr—Crubeen), Acis (Acre—Minpsa), , Lucky Moment (Lackham —Musical Moments), Movietone (Moabite—Marriage Bell); Cape Gold (Gape Horn—Miss Gold), and Richborough (Chief Ruler—Rosselate). Several of these have not sported silk yet, but Esteem, .Haulbowline and Lucky Moment are said to be well forward.

The, Maiden Stakes, six- ! furlongs, will be contested by another big field, in which Baskier, Valrewa, Jayson and Mas terton have all shown promise. The High-weight Handicap, one mile, will draw a -moderate lot, -of whom Rameses is. the most “classy.” Playground won nicely at Otaki, and a good word is said for Spearopa. In the Lansdowne Handicap, seven furlongs, are good sorts like dluny, Lady Rene and Waterspear, and’ this trio may carry the money. The principal event,' the Masterton Handicap, one mile and a quarter, will

see in action again several that. ran at Otaki’, and of this team the prospects, of Pahu read as well as any. Merry Damon ift coming on well now and will strip fitter to-morrow. Marjoram shaped disappointingly last week, but Black Mint is always a possibility. Th© lightweights are not an attractive lot, and Pahu looks like finishing up with most admirers. ■ < ■

The Lawn Handicap, one mile, will see some place-getters at Otaki in action, notably Dainty Ways and Robbie’s Mistake, together with Tunbridge and Spearopa. Dainty Ways looks like coming good again, and will be amongst the best backed if H. Gray has the mount. . i..

A small but fairly smart crowd will probably line up for the Grandstand Handicap, setfen furlongs, and recent form points to Mis’s Ransom, though Habit and Marjoram (if reserved), may also go well. Keddar does not look ready, but Full Mark is well. The public will have a tough proposition to finish 'the day with, the Electric Handicap, five and a half furlongs, attracting 20 acceptors. Quick beginners like Portray, Hunting Call and Baskier will have an advantage, here, and quality generally counts' most in these “hurryups,” weight being a minor consideration.

Concerning the Awapuni horses engaged, at Masterton a Manawatu scribe states that Miss Hastings is backward at present; King Hal and Rule Britannia covered five furlongs on Tuesday morning in good style; Haulbowline, in company with Trojan Melody arid King Colossus, ran. “four”.in 51 2-ssec., the trio finishing together. The two-yaar-old Jean Ladosio (Arausio —Jean Laddo) still requires experience. Keddar could not pace it with Glenrossie at the end of, six furlongs run in 1.20, and Lady Spear, was just in front of Spearopa and Hunting Boy after covering five in Imin. 6 2-ssec. . Merry Damon and- Pahu worked on.the plough, as did Brilliant Light/ Robbie’s : Mistake, Lady Alophen and Braggart, q , . /, . Riding engagements for. Masterton:— H. Gray.—Lady Rene, Dainty Ways. T. Green.—'Merry Damon, -Keddar, Fitzquex, Braggart, Acis, Lady Spear. W. Broughton.—Veronese, Haulbowline, Hawkshaw, Sir Ronald. H. N. Wiggins.—Pahu; C. W. France.—King HaL
