SOUTHERN DERBY HOPE

LIKELY STAYER IS GUSTAVO WON GUINEAS AFTER BAD RUN. IDEAL TYPE FOR DISTANCE RACES. From the south comes a challenge to Cylinder in the shape of a younger full-brother to Count Cavour, who won both Derbies five years ago. Besides being a class above the opposition this three-year-old is meeting in the other island, Gustavo has shown JiimSelf equally at home on good and bad tracks, and ■ the mighty son of Limond will need to put his best foot forward to substantiate his claim for three-year-old supremacy. More will be known if the pair meet in the Harcourt Cup this month, but at all events Cylinder will find a worthy opponent fo test his mettle when they / meet in the New Zealand Derby.

Count Cavoui- was one *of the best three-year-olds in the Dominion in recent years, so it ie not surprising to find that the Boniform marp Bon Bord has thrown another good one to Solferino. To date'Gustavo has done practically all that has been asked of him, over distances that suit a stayer, r.nd he appears to be still on the up-grade. Of course this youngstei/ has beaten practically nothing of account, but the .manner in which he has silenced the 1 Opposition has been attractive, and who knows but that he may prove the equal of his famous brother. Bred in 1027 by his owner, Mr. J. R. McKenzie, Gustavo is by Solferino from Bon Bord. Bon Bord, whose earlier progeny included King’s Trumpeter-, Count Cavour, Gay and Good and Clareneeuse, was by Boniform. from Ormolu, an imported mare from Hay Presto by Sanfoin from Miss Preston, by Prestonpans from Woodroof, by Cymbal from Wood Queen, by King of the Forest from Woodbine by Stockwell. Boniform was a half-brother to that great sire ,of stayers Martian, being by Multiform (Derby winner) from- Otterden, by Sheen, from Spring Morn, by'Springfield. Multiform, a great stayer and a sire/' of stayers, was by Hotchkiss (Musket-Pctroleuse) from Formo, by Sterlingworth from Pulchra by Rosicrucian. Boniform won the Great Northern Derby and sired Bon Reve (dual Derby-winner) and The Toll' (Derby, Stead and Canterbury Cup winner). ; Orme, the sire of Ormolu, sired Birkenhead, The Wag of Kilbroney) and Orby, (Derby winner and site of Grand Parade); He was a son of\ a Derby winner and sire, of several Derby winners-—Ormonde ■ (‘by Bend Or, Derby winner) from ■„ Angelica (sister to St.Simon), by Galopin from St.. Angela, by King Tom. ' ' ~ How The Guineas Was Won.

A field of 'five paraded for the Dunedin Guineas, Ball Dress and Water Power being the, withdrawals. The start was considerably .delayedowing Ao the reluctance of Riri to face 'the’barrier. They eventually got away satisfactorily. When half a furlong had been covered Gustavo got squeezed back, and a little further- on Riri, who had made a forward move, was also sent to the rear. AL Jolson and Compensation were in charge at the far turn, but going up the rise Riri ran up to them and took control. His effort, however, was shortlived, and he had retired at the home turn. . '

Al Jolson and Compensation’ were together at the straight entrance clear of ■Spoon, Gustavo and Riri. The leaders stopped 'badly when turned for home and Spbon : shot to the front with Gustavo putting ;in his claim. Spoon appeared to be holding the favourite safe inside the distance, but the race was all over when the latter drew up alongside her. Gustavo was going away at the finish’ to win with ease by a length. Gustavo’s performance was 'all the ’more attractive considering the bad passage he received. He was / sent back fully five lengths and took some time to again settle down. , It is unusual for any of the Solferino stock to win as two-year-olds, but Gustavo is, an exceptional youngster and he broke the ice at the conclusion of last season. He was raced, over sprint distances at the National meeting, but, meeting some speedy three-year-olds, it was not expected that he would shine, though his finishing efforts in each of those races attracted attention. Produced over a mile course at Ashburton he justified the confidence placed in him by 'beating Compris and Desert Song. The form shown in open company by Desert iSong at Geraldine emphasised the value of that form. At Dunedin Gustavo won both, Iris races with ease. ' . The following are his performances to date; —• . At two years: — £ Unplaced Russley Plato , — Unplaced Autumn Nursery — Ist Novice Stakes, Amberley 80 SO At three years:— Unplaced Cashmere Plate — Unplaced Longbeach Handicap — Ist Fairfield Handicap, Ashburton . .120 Ist Maungatua.
