FIRE IN ENGINE-ROOM
SASH AND'DOOR BUILDING. VALUABLE BELTING DESTROYED. Fire broke out' in the engine room of the Sash and Door Company’s factory, in Molesworth Street, New Plymouth, late . last night -and 'gutted the small building adjoining the long workshop. ' When the alarm was given at 11.45 p.m. by Mr. S. Langley, of the gas- ' works, the fire had gained a good, hold, ' flame and a large quantity of smoke ' emerging from the roof. The brigade arrived on the scene almost immediate- ’ ly, having been notified by the watch- ’ man, Mr. R. Inch, and two borough emI ployees, Messrs. J. Hefford and A. ; Campbell, one of whom broke the auto- ’ matic alarm at the corner of Gover and Gill Streets. When the brigade arrived the en- ’ gine room was blazing fiercely but luck--1 Hy a thick brick wall prevented the fire ' catching the main factory. Late last night it was impossible to assess the damage accurately, but a heavy belt valued at about £7O was ' destroyed, while the interior of the building was damaged. The large steam engine which was in the centre of the ’ fire did not appear to be very extensively damaged. The building -was in--1 sured with both the North and South : British companies.
