Meanwhile the Fascists were taking advantage of the police concentrating on the Reichstag and raided unprotected business streets with their cries of “Hail Germany ayake!” and attack-, ed supposedly Jewish shops, cafes and hotels, smashing all the windows, especially in thq. big stores.. /Reports indicate that rioting in one of Berlin’s chief, shopping centres was thp most serious of all the incidents. Th© mob driven back from the Reichstag broke into organised groups, numbering from 20 to 200, and streamed about” the streets, shouting “Down with the Jews.” . •. ■ ■/ ,‘"G ■

Big general stores on Werthciffi Tietz, with enqrmous frontages, were attacked and windows smashed. The damage would have beeij, more extensive hud. not other shopkeepers hurriedly shuttered their windows, and extinguished the lights. Motbr-c ar B were also attacked and windows broken. A large force of .police, withdrawn from the Reichstag, charged the mob/ cleared the streets and made a score of arrests.
