GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

THE OPEN AND THE AMATEUR ALL EYES ON PALMERSTON - NORTH. PLAYERS’ • PROSPECTS DISCUSSED. ■ ... :

(Ry

“Stance.”)

I'He-two.’big -1 events'of tlie-Ncw Zealand golfing year Will..commence at Pal-, ■merston Nortli ncxt - “' week. Tlie field will be the strongest that has yet- ctjfitestcd the titles: The crack amateurs; d’rom all parts ..ofc the country will be there and-20^0f,-the best professionals. Tlie course - i si. rep or ted ;to be-in splendid order,, and though the scoring, will nodoubt be good; the writer ventures to predict that if any player breaks 300 in the Open he will win. Scoring in- ordinary. rounds; is Jone- thing, but scoring in • Jan open, i/vtjry-iniich- another —there: is ; That grpaL the . mental Jhazard—-a ;troublp<. that becomes more and more .powerful as the event pro-. ■ ceeds\ . • ' .‘ '

•' The present'’.Open ■champion, A. J.l Shaw, will-’be there to defend' his’ title, and? lie -will- take'.a- lot of - beating. • Hei has- put in a- tremendous amount of practice-this year, and it is practice that will- stand- to a player in a searching test likc’this 5 Shaw has played'over {the course and : is confident that he will 'break- 70 in one of the four rounds-. Possibly he will, but the odds arc against /him. \ ‘ h Ted Douglas. (Auckland) is every whit <>s- brilliant a - golfer as- Shaw, but his two great troubles are lack of prac. lice ;and a- habit of being a little careless v on the greens. However, he is such a sound player through the green that he must be counted a dangerous candidate for tho big title. Fred Rutter created a big impression 'ait Wanganui last year, and ho certainly played some very fine golf. His real Weakness was on the putting greens. Last year he was conducting an indoor, school,- but this year he has been at- , tached' to the Glcndowie Club and will probably have improved. E. J. Moss is .the fairway king, and fairway kings are at their best in Opens, where it is steadiness, not brilliance, that counts. Moss has won this event twice before, and he will be handy this time. '' Reg Butters is probably the best of the other -professionals, but does not seem to be able to carry any luck in this event. PROSPECTS, OF AMATEURS. Among the amateurs the most dangerous in the Open would appear to be -Horton and Duncan. Horton was runner- . *up to- Shaw last year. If his putter /. -had been move -kind -to him he might have won. He is a master with his irons, though at times he is rather apt to underclub. However, he is playing up to his best form at present and is sure to be in the first half-dozen. Theflat course at Hokowhitu is sure-to favour Dundan, and the veteran will keep the best of them /busy. His short game •is likely to prove invaluable, though his weakness with his long iron shots may get him into trouble. . 'The two Wanganui youngsters, Reilly and Silk, have conie well into prominence as a result of their fine play in the tournament at Belmont last week. Last Sear Reilly ivas rather unlucky not to Seat Sloau Morpeth. Morpeth told the •writer that he considered him the most troinising player he had met. He is

Ithe' present holder, with Bl Ji Sinith, Auckland; of the foursomes- title! His l game through’ the green is excellent, but ■h'e--'’is ; none - too'-' sure- bf' hi&" Jpilt-'tifig ‘ at: ■times:

■ Silk- was fourth amateur in’ the open last time, but fell in the first to Ray Blank, who. was-at- the top of’his-form on that occasion. He has - shown some of his best golf at Palmerston aind can be depended- upon to- get further than q the first round this time;

■ J. L. Black accounted for tlib ppposi-itioii-i in the Sputh. Auckland: everif'-com* ifoijtably andrshowed; that his- golf is-Its: good- as evefi' .Though not what ..might (be;.described as- avstylist, he- is?usually: ;thore when,! lie: is Wanted, .- J ‘

•*' ■ ' > ■' ' -•/ • , ‘ ;r- ''** • Rana ■ Wagg has • been "plhyiiig -- in . great ;sty.le- this; season*'arid; lias- tWp; ? decisive; wins over Dunean tb' Id’s credit', but his form at Belmont was- scarcely imjiressive. .. . _ .... 4 -Alex., Sime, the .man: frond.-the .West Gpastt was< a. competitor at Belmqnt.but .suffered' one; ofc the severest, defeats*, of liis career.-at' the; hands, of Dr;- Williams. However,:this is- not his true form,, and he is- sure to go better next' week. The Auckland!'crack, H. Plumley, will iprobably' be on tlie scone to uphold’ the ■reputation of' the left-handers. He has ■been steadily improving during tho Ihst fe.W'-yeats- and- has proved his capacity to mix:if with the best of them.

. Dr.. IL Ross is- coming from: Dunedin, and the-little doctor is at the fop of |his form. He headed the/ qualifying [ rounds-'at Balinacew-an- by no IcSe- than ill strokes, and southerners fully exipect him to make a great bid for both titles:

L. Gat-hrb made : a- big: bid' for the amateur last year, taking Sloan Morpeth- to the 36th hole, but his form in the recent Wanganui tournament was not good, and Silk would appear to hold him- safe- this . time. Jack Goss, D. C. Collins and A. E. Ekstedt are three proved battlers who are likely, to upset the best of them in the amateur. TARANAKI CONTINGENT. Taranaki is sending a contingent of nine players, and- it is one of the strongest the province has- ever sent to this ■event. Eltham has five—L. T. Quin-, A. J. Quin, F. Quin, E. L. Abbott and A. A. Stewart. New Plymouth has A.E. Conway, C. H. Stephenson and R‘. A. Boon, and Hawera, W. O’Callaghan. Of this array the main hopes are Leo Quin and. A. E. Conway.. Leo is back: to his best form and showed at the recent Alanawatu tournament that the course has no- terrors for him. He is blessed with, that happy temperament that is necessary for big golf, and is never more dangerous - than when' pressed hardest. Conway is playing better than at any stage of his career, as was shown by/his record-breaking effort in the recent qualifying round at New Plymouth. He has recently played at Palmerston, and did well.: ‘He and Quin - ' meet in the north, arid south match during the weekend, and the result will be watched with interest. ■ <. -Eltham has the task of defending the O’Rourke Vase, which it so brilliantly captured at Belmont I'ast year, and, with the three Quins and Abbott and Stewart to choose from: should be capable 6f fielding a strong team. It was hoped that New Plymouth would have a team,, but the failure of Hasell to enter for the championship has compelled its withdrawal. New Plymouth was fourth last year. z The. open would appeal likely to go to the best of the professionals, probably Shaw, Douglas, Moss or Rutter, but the amateurs Horton, Ross and Douglas are capable of making things interesting for them. The amateur is very open. Horton, Black, Durban, Ross and Quin have all won or filled the bill-

of runner-up on more than one occasion, and-they will all be - “knefcking at the door” when the semifinal stage is reached,' { : ■_ ..1 , i . \ 1/ / / NORTH V. SOUTH TARANAKI. - v - y- |. C. H. Fyfe will replace R. A. Boon in tlie North Taranaki golf team to play South TaliOiaki next week-end. -Boon was' not. available. , , I-' • - ’ : NEW'' ZSKADANDf 'rDuJRNAMENT. :?
