WELLINGTON CLUB FINED
“HOST” SUPPLIED LIQUOR. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 10. Mr. E. Page, S.M., to-day delivered reserved judgment in the case of the Athenaum Club, charged with breach of the Licensing Act. He imposed a fine of £lO, and in doing so indicated that the defence might have been all right if the instance had been an isolated one, but there was a system by which the hosts provided the cost of liquor on each occasion, it 'being £3 4s, and on each occasion the host of the evening had been voted £3 3s as an entertainment allowance.
In each case also there was a letter, similar to the one produced in the case, reading; “As host of the 27th for the Athenaum dub meeting I am taking the liberty of procuring at my, own exxpense a small quantity of liquor. This I am having delivered to the Embassy Hall and will be pleased if you will dispense it to my guests and members of the Athenaum Club.”
