In the course of his address at the annual meeting of the White Star Line, Ltd., Lord Kylsant referred to. the new liner 5 Oceanic, upon which it has been decided to defer activity for the moment. He said that with the many-sided developments in marine engineering service and the varying types of machinery now available, .it was desirable to give fulf consideration to the design' of the propelling machinery of such a large liner which, while being the last word in speed and equipment, should hold her - own as an economic proposition in the North Atlantic . service. For this liner, so far as the propelling machinery is concerned, the principal alternatives seem to be the direct-geared turbine drive with high-pressure boilers, the turbo-electric drive and the direct oil engine or oil electric drive. For smaller ships, however, the geared turbine drive has to compete with the modern steamreciprocating engine and the turbo-elec-tric drive. ' Most of these alternative types have beein embodied in new British ships, and comparative results should be abailable shortly.
