SOUTH TARANAKI ANGLING

SEASON OPENS SUCCESSFULLY. ACTIVITY AT HATCHERIES. The fishing season opened satisfactorily in South Taranaki and anglers are well pleased. Not infrequently October 1 has ended with a number of fishermen’s baskets empty, but this year practically every one secured three or four fish. • The season opened in fine weather, with the streams in good order. The rivers were all well stocked. The fish were of good size and some up to 61b. in weight were caught. The Hawera Acclimatisation Society’s hatcheries are a scene of activity at present. The ponds are full of fry and there are quantities of younger trout in , the hatcheries. Several new pheasants have also been obtained. In the hatchcry building there are 175,000 brown trout fry, the ova from which they came having recently arrived from Matatapu, Dunedin. These are in particularly good order as the trouble previously experienced from dirty water has not been recurrent. There is a quantity of slime in the water, but tins is arrested by the pumice filters. In the ponds there are 60,000 brown trout fry about a month old. These came as ova from Christchurch. The stock rainbow fish were stripped in July and there are between 30,000 and 40,000 fry in the ponds. Four sittings of pheasants’ eggs have been put. down,, each of eight eggs. Six hens and four cock birds have recently been secured, bringing the total number up to 34 hens and 11 cocks. During the week-end 50,000 fry will be liberated in streams along the Skeet Road.
