SOUTH COMPETITION ENTRIES. DECREASE IN ROOT CROPS. A decrease of 67 is revealed in the ■ 1030 entries for the competitions of t|ie South Taranaki Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs when they are compared with those of 1929. This decline was mostly in the root, crop competition entries, the calf-rearing being well up to the figures of the previous year. The entries must be considered most satisfactory, however, almost 50 schools being represented. »

ELTHAM GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP. QUIN BROTHERS TO PLAY FINAL. L. Quin defeated H. Wills in the semi-final .of the Eltham Golf Club’s senior championship. The players were all square at the 18th hole and had ■to play a further hole to decide the contest. The final will be played between J. .Quin , and L. Quin. PERSONAL ITEMS. Ross, who are leaving Manaia .to reside at Inglewood, were made a presentation by the congregation of the Manaia Presbyterian Church on Friday evening., Mrs. Ross received a chiming clock, Mr. Ross was the recipient of a propelling pencil, and Manter Archie Rose a book Mr. Ross was one of the elders of the church and was a teacher in the Sunday school. There' was a good attendance. of church members and good wishes were conveyed to Mr. and Mrs. Ross. GENERAL ITEMS.' . A euchre and dance will be held at th Kapuni hall to-morrow in aid of the Church of England bazaar funds. There were large congregations at the Hawera Methodist Church yesterday when a visit was made by the Rev. A. J. The Hawera fire brigade was called, to a chimney fire in Princes Street at 6.15 p.m. on Saturday. Flying-Officer lan Keith flew one of the Western Federation’s Moths from New Plymouth to Hawera on Saturday. He had with him Miss J. Winstone, Wanganui, who is learning to fly. The weather' was bad, visibility being poor and conditions near the mountain bumpy. There was a slight following wind, the plane leaving Bell Block at 1.55 p.m., and landing at Hawera at 2.25. The training of Hawera club pupils will proceed. . A deep gash in his leg was sustained on Friday by Mr. W. V. Parker, Ararata, who was admitted to a Hawera private hospital on Saturday. Mr. darker was felling a tree and was running away as it began to fall, when he stepped upon the handle of his axe. Swinging up, the blade inflicted a deep gash below his left knee. Blood poisoning is believed to have supervened and the injured man’s condition is fairly serious. A vote of sympathy with Mr. h.„ C. Barleyman was passed at a meeting of the South Taranaki Winter Show executive on Friday night. For several mouths he has been seriously ill and the hope was expressed for his speedy recovery. Hooker in connection with the Hawera Winter Show since its inception 21 years ago was voiced by the directors on Friday evening. A narrow escape from injury was the experience of the occupants of a ear driven by Mr. D. Hamilton, Hawera, which skidded at Ngaere yesterday. The skid was .occasioned by the failure ot (he differential, which jammed the back axle and caused the car to slide violently on the wet road. It did not, however, overturn and the passengers suffered no injury.
